In this article, “tech companies use persuasive technologies’ that harm children, psychologists
say,” there are many cases of tech companies using unethical behavior that could harm children.
According to this article “a group of psychologists has taken a stand against the use of
“manipulative psychological techniques” to get children addicted to digital devices” meanwhile
some parents are thankful for technology such as, phones, tablets, television, and computers
because they provide endless entertainment for their children. The reality of technology is a bit
scary because I believe allowing prolong daily use of gadgets could be creating some form of
addiction to these tech gadgets but also without these gadgets how will we navigate the world.
Technology can have positive and negative effects on all of us, with the use of technology we
can connect with our family, and friends, we can also use it for literacy skills that will help us in
the future but also technology can cause a lack of attention, aggressive behaviors, and sleep
problems in children. For example, in 2013 a girl aged four became Britain’s youngest known
iPad addict, “she is one of many child patients displaying compulsive behavior after using the
tablet device from an early age” (NBC News, 2013) it’s a little interesting and sad how one can
become so addicted to a device that they experience withdrawal symptoms with the device is
taken away. In the video “ethical use of technology,” Mr. Green talks about how technology
gives us power and power means that we have to make choices that we didn’t have to make
before that is a powerful statement “technology gives us power” its powerful because it true,
technology is being use in many professions. Technology can be empowering and transforming,
but the difference can lie in how one choose to use it. Technology can be used to enrich and
improve our lives, or it can bring on turmoil causes us distress and we can lose our self in it.
Although some may see technology as harmful it can also protect us, for example, technology
has been used to ensure our safety such as keeping track of our keys, tracking our love one
location, and making sure we are safe in our homes by setting our alarms. In scripture shows that
technology and tools can be used for both good and evil. In Exodus 31:1-11, God described the
wisdom and understanding he gives to skilled Israelite workers “also I have given ability to all
the skilled workers to make everything I have commanded you” (NIV) as you keep reading on
you see later what happens when these skills were applied for evil.
In conclusion, the point of this article were for psychologists to help parents take a stand of using
technology or data. I personally believe that there is nothing wrong with using technology they
only people who misuse, abuse, or have an unethical way of using technology are broken people
who wants to hurt and manipulate others.
