Abstract
This paper explores the Myers-Briggs personality type indicator, which was made in
direct response to Carl Jung’s book Psychological times. The type indicator is used to help
people identify, understand and use their personality types in their everyday lives. The research
describes the personality type ISTJ, which can be broken down into Introvert, Sensing, Thinking
and Judging. The research also brings up the validity of each temperament and characteristic
associated with ISTJ, I also use this research to find ways to make my personality beneficial in
my everyday life so that I can function more effectively in the career of my choice.

“The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of
his evil treasure brings forth evil” (Matthew 12:35, New International Version). I’ve always
been intrigued by this verse because I always wondered how one determined exactly how a
person was good or evil. Dr. Kahlib Fischer mentions in his presentation that, “a persons
worldview can be interpreted as an intellectual, emotional, and spiritual framework by which a
person views reality, makes sense of life and applies meaning to every area of life.” A person’s
outlook also directly affects their personality, the way they treat others as well as themselves is a
direct reflection of their unique worldview. Personality can be loosely defined as the individual
characteristics and patterns that shape an individuals behavior. To find out more about my
personality I completed the Jung Typology Test (Butt, 1998) based on Carl Jung’s book
Psychological Times. My results are as follows:
I have moderate preference of introversion over extraversion (33%)
I have moderate preference of sensing over intuition (47%)
I have strong preference of thinking over feeling (88%)
I have strong preference of judging over perceiving (84%)
I’ve always found myself to be one of the few people in my small circle of friends, and co-
workers who seemed to enjoy being by himself quite a bit more than the others. It wasn’t until I
filled out and completed a Myers-Briggs type indicator that I found out the specific reason
behind my somewhat peculiar behavior, After finishing the test I learned that I am considered an
ISTJ which means that I am an Introverted, Sensing, Thinking and Judging personality;
Otherwise known as one of life’s natural organizers. This is interesting because most people tend
to be the exact opposite. My challenge is to learn ways to be more productive and not allow my
introverted personality stop me from contributing in my social and professional life.
Step 1

Introvert
The first letter in my four-letter personality description stands for introvert. For this I
tested at 31%, which puts me at a moderate preference for introverted tendencies. When one
thinks of an introvert they tend to think of a person with limited relationships and somewhat
guarded in their relationships among others. While this may be true in some cases in most it is
quite the contrary. Introverts have many different ways of managing relationships. As I read
more about introverted personalities I learned that there are multiple ways a person can interpret
his surrounds and this contributes to the way he is perceived. Kroeger, Thuesen, and Rutledge
(2002) say, “ In American society Introverts are outnumbered about three to one by Extraverts.” I
only add this because I find it quite staggering that I could be in such a minority of people in our
country. I now know that as an introvert I have to make time for myself to be able to sit and
contemplate decisions when it comes to matters pertaining to work. I so often let myself be
bullied and rushed into decisions that I think sitting back and actually considering processes
would be greatly beneficial to me in both my professional and personal life. Learning more about
introverted tendencies will help me to better gauge how to talk to my employees and allow for
better interaction between us because I feel that sometimes my leadership skills are an issue
because I don’t allow myself the proper environment to communicate with others.
Sensing
There are two ways that people can gather information and make decisions; these two
groups are divided into sensors, who tend to gather their information by using one of the five
senses and intuitives who gather their information by use of theoretical principles. After finishing
the type indicator I learned that I was considered a sensor. My overall score indicated that I
preferred sensing moderately at 47% but I personally believe I might be a little bit higher on the

scale. I didn’t find this information completely surprising given that I have always in the back of
my consciousness thought that people who totally gathered their information by anything other
than realistic and tangible facts lived in somewhat of a fantasy world. To dig deeper into my
feelings about this matter Kroeger et al. (2002) states, “Sensors prefer to learn through facts,
which they prefer to be given sequentially.” This sentence perfectly describes the way I feel
about obtaining information from third parties. If I were to focus more on the information being
given instead of how it is delivered it would allow me to be more efficient in how I put that
information to use in various office settings. After reading the text I feel as though I’m the
definition of the sensing category, which means that as I observe the world I like to focus the
information gathered on fact and fact only. I often find myself at odds with coworkers who are
considered to be intuitives because we struggle to consistently communicate with each other and
once something is lost in translation it really affects my ability to accomplish any meaningful
task in an orderly and effective manner.
Thinking
I’ve always prided myself on not letting emotions impact my everyday decision making
process. With that being said my third indicator is not surprising once tested I graded out at a
strong preference for thinking over feeling at 88%. I find that I don’t consider the feelings of
others when I make a decision and at times this has left my loved ones in a bit of a bind. Truth be
told I have always been taught from an early age that being firm and making educated decisions
after thinking through the consequences of the action was the only way to be.
Kroeger et al. (2002) mentions, “It’s a bit unfortunate that Jung used the terms Thinking,
which usually refers to intellect, and feeling, which refers to emotion, to describe the decision
making process.” I personally connected with this part of the book because my significant other
MYERS-BRIGGS PERSONALITY TEST ONLINE 6
is on the exact opposite of the spectrum. Before I met her I would have thought that a person that
lived their life this way was insane; but after being around her for three years I can tell you that
she thinks about everything just as much if not more than I do. I believe the only difference is
how we interpret that information and what we do with the information after we obtain it.
Without my partners compassion I don’t know how successful I would be in any facet of life so
it’s impossible for me to pass judgment on people who are considered feelers. This also carries
over into some of the basic management skills I have to use on an everyday basis. I think the
major skill it harms is my human skills because sometimes I find it hard to understand the
decisions others make when I feel as though they aren’t thought through completely. On the
contrary I think being a thinker helps my conceptual skills immensely; I feel as though my ability
to diagnose difficult situations and the ways to properly fix those situations is a very beneficial
trait to have as a manager in any situation.
Judging
As we reach the final letter of my psychological type it essentially falls back to my need
for everything to be planned and coordinated to ensure smooth transitions in my day. I can see
why Kroeger et al. (2002) states, “The fourth letter of your psychological type is, we believe the
most significant source of interpersonal tension at work.” For this final letter I tested out at 84%,
which means I have a very strong preference for judging over perceiving. I believe judging can
be equated to structure and rules and perceiving can be equated to freedom and keeping options
open. In my case this is extremely true because I follow strict guidelines in my life as to how
things are done and the following of those rules and protocols. I don’t have much experience
with anyone who I would consider to be a perceiver even in my work life I don’t have enough
MYERS-BRIGGS PERSONALITY TEST ONLINE 7
interaction with others to really observe their personalities and formulate a valid opinion on
them.
I’ve always had a perception that perceivers just led carefree lives; they don’t care about
rules and do whatever they want whenever they want. I feel as though they don’t make decisions
in a timely fashion and I’ve always felt that if your not making a timely decision your most likely
making a bad one. There’s a flipside to this though as I believe most creative are probably
perceivers. Being a perceiver allows creative to go with the flow and be more innovative because
their minds don’t make them conform to a specific set of rules. I’m happy that I’m a judging
personality, I prefer order and structure it allows me to stay on schedule and accomplish task at a
very acceptable rate; though sometimes I wish I allowed myself to go with the flow and not put
so much pressure on myself to be on a strict routine. My abilities as a planner and organizer are
greatly enhanced by this part of my personality. If any issues arise I’ve usually already
formulated a plan that will allow everything to continue running smoothly.
Conclusion
Overall I believe that my personality allows me to be a great planner and overall an
efficient person. I feel as though sometimes I do struggle to find things that I would consider to
be fun because I’m always focused on doing things in a timely and orderly fashion. As I
continue within this class I hope that I can develop myself into being more efficient and allowing
myself to change my management habits so that my team can be more successful and continue to
develop new business and retain our old customers as well.
