Pornographic Videos: Pornography should not be introduced into marriage since it may trigger
an individual into cheating to practice what is in the videos. Watching porn videos should be
entertained in society since it comes with other negative thoughts that can be worse. Young
children should also be kept out of this since they will try to copy what is in the content and
engage in sex, leading to early pregnancies or the spread of disease.
Heavy Petting: Christians make decisions mostly after referring to the Bible, where they are
guided on how they should treat those people in need and also pray frequently for different
divine guidance. Christin ethics and traditional beliefs have been challenging in modern society,
and thus different religions have different views concerning life and how to seek guidance in the
scripture. People in marriage seek their advice and guidance from the Bible, and they also pray
for their Lord to bless their marriage and live a happy life.
Homosexual Marriage: According to Hebrews 13.4, marriage is holy and should be honored
since God will judge those who go against their marriage will. Christianity also does not allow or
support same-sex marriage, and thus those practicing homosexuality should be condemned and
should be guided as per the biblical teachings. In the book of Genesis, it is evident that God
created a man and a woman to help each other. God's main motive creating the two opposite sex
shows that God is not in support of homosexuality. The modern society has defied the teachings
of the scripture, and thus punishment would prevail in the end times.
Lesbian School teacher: according to the biblical teachings (Mathew 22 vs. 39), we should love
our neighbors as we love ourselves. The issues of the sexuality of the teacher should not arise
since if it emerges that the teacher is a homosexual, it will make the students never listen or
DISCUSSION 3
understand her. The sexuality of the teacher should be kept private, and she should continue with
her work provided it is not affecting the morality and the student behavior.
Wagner Q1: Science and religion are important in society, and thus there are ethical values that
both communities should follow. The clowning f human beings have various ethical
implications, and thus religion does not support it but believe in their God, who is the maker of
humankind. Science can only be relied on when using technology.
Wagner Q2: According to Christianity, God is the giver of life, while science believes that
human beings evolved to become how they are. The question at stake is that why are we not
evolving now like before? The science community has failed to answer this question making the
Christian view on humankind to rely on the scripture.
Birth control: Birth control is usually designed to prevent one from conception and thus
regulating the number of births. Birth control plays a critical role, especially when one is
suffering from a certain illness that might affect the fetus or when the mother is not safe for
delivery due to certain complications. However, it is wrong to apply birth control with the aim of
cheating and committing adultery. According to Galatians: 5 vs. 18, those practicing fornication,
adultery, idolatry, and lewdness will not inherit the kingdom of God, and thus, Christian ethics
does not allow such practices in the society. The church has no formal position on birth control,
but some believers agree that non-abortive forms of birth control are not prohibited. There is
nowhere in the scripture that forbids birth control, and thus the society should not add their rules
which are not in the Bible. Our attitude towards the act should not fail to acknowledge that
children are gifts from God. "Behold, children are a gift of the Lord; the fruit of the womb is a
reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one's youth. How blessed is
the man whose quiver is full of them" (Psalm 127:3-4). If birth control is to be used, then it
DISCUSSION 4
should be used in the right way with a good motive. There are various birth control methods,
which include the use of condoms, IUD, pills, tubal ligation, and vasectomy. However, the best
method in modern society is the use of condoms since it has no health implications and is readily
available.
Sex studies: Sex studies should be allowed and even made mandatory in schools due to the
current rise in technology. Children access mobile phones, which enables them to access the
photographic content without being noticed by their parents. The explicit content on the internet
has eroded the Christian culture, and thus sex studies should be used to protect the young
generation from practicing what they watch and listen on the internet. The government should
play a major role in sponsoring these studies at all educational levels and even fund it in order to
reach a wide scope of children in the country.
HPV Vaccine: HPV is a sexually transmitted infection that is harmless and sometimes does not
need treatment, but in some cases, it can lead to cancer and genital warts. Ethically, there is a
need to vaccinate against HPV since it is part of maintaining good health standards. There is
nowhere in the scripture that prohibits vaccination. HPV vaccination would help those in
marriage as they are actively having sex, and it might be difficult to know the HPV carrier.

Group 3 Summary Week 3-Sex
The goal of our discussion this week was define sex & sexual immorality in terms of Biblical ethics.
In the process, we also discussed the following topics:
What or which sexual acts are considered to be sinful?
Can un-married couples still have intimacy without engaging in pre-marital sex?
Are certain sexual acts okay if it is between husband & wife?
What does the Bible say about homosexuality and acting upon these desires?
What does the Bible say about human cloning and genetic engineering?
Are preventative measures (birth control & HPV vaccine) Biblically unethical?
Should we study sex?
How can sex be studied so that it doesn’t conflict with Biblical ethics?
Pornographic Videos & Heavy Petting
Group thoughts
All members of the group agree that engaging in pornography is sexually immoral & also a violation of the
marriage. Also, the group agrees that pre-marital sex is a sin.
Individual thoughts
Bavya & Nick agreed that the husband’s desire to bring pornography into his marriage was the result of another
underlying problem in the marriage. Tracy and Morgan also pointed out that the husband should not force his wife
into sin.
Advice for Pornography video Case Study
Tracy points out that watching pornography videos is like bringing a third person into the marriage, which
is against God’s institute of marriage.
"Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed undefined, for God will judge the
sexually immoral and adulterous.
“The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere
faith” (1Timothy 1:5; New International Version).
Bavya and Nicolas suggested that the couple seek Christian marital counseling
Heavy Petting
Individual Thoughts
The group struggled to understand the act of petting and if this goes against God’s instructions to remain pure until
marriage. Nick & Yusur discussed the importance of defining what constitutes as sex in the Bible. Bavya, Tracy &
Morgan disagreed with Nick & think that the couple is engaging in sexually immoral behavior.
Nick stated that if sex is defined as only the act of vaginal penetration, then this does not violate God’s law
of remaining pure before marriage
Bavya mentions that Clark & Rakestraw define petting as the act of “fondling another person’s sexually
excitable parts”
Tracy and Morgan argue that regardless of how sex is defined, this couple is engaging in an act that brings
sexual pleasure & will eventually lead to premarital sex.

Group 3 Summary Week 3-Sex
“Let sexual immorality and every sort of uncleanness or greediness not even be mentioned among you, a
just as is proper for holy people.” (Ephesians 5:3, ESV)
Conclusion
After discussion, group agrees that pre-marital sex is immoral & a sin. The group agrees that vaginal intercourse is
the primary way that the Bible discusses sex. However, the group still struggles to which (if any) other types of
acts/behaviors also fit in the Bible definition of sex and sexual immorality.
Homosexual Marriage & Lesbian School Teacher
Group thoughts
The group agrees that the Bible defines homosexual behavior as sexually immoral. The group struggled with how to
advise Stan in the first case study, but the group did not struggle with their opinions of the lesbian schoolteacher.
Individual thoughts
Tracy, Nicolas, Bavya, &Yusur advised that Stan should remain celibate & that he should seek Christian
counseling
Morgan pointed out that if Stan knows he has homosexual feelings and has not acted on them, then he did
not sin
"Likewise, also the men, leaving the natural use of women, burned in their lust for one another, men with
men committing what is shameful" (Rom 1:27a).
Yusur talked about if sexual orientation is something that we are born with or if a person chooses to be
attracted to the same sex
Bavya further talked about the importance for Stan to consult God in prayer, because the weight of his
homosexual tendencies is a Cross that he has to bear which he may have conflicting feelings about
“God loves everyone & I would hope that Stan knows this. But God shows his love for us in that while we
were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8, ESV)
Bavya & Nick agreed that bringing up the schoolteacher’s sexuality was irrelevant to her performance as a
teacher
Tracy & Morgan stated that we as Christians should guide people towards Christ with love
Nick agreed with Tracy & Morgan, he further added that in showing love the woman would be more likely
to accept Christ
"Love your neighbor as yourself" (Matt 22:39b)
“Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. Show hospitality to
one another without grumbling.” (1 Peter 4:8-9, ESV)
Conclusion
After discussion, all group members empathize with Stan’s situation, but advise him to not act on those desires.
He should consider Christian counseling to see if there is an underlying issue that has resulted in this attraction.
In regard to the teacher, all members agree that discussing the teacher’s sexuality is disrespectful & will also
pull her further away from Christ. Instead, the group agreed that acting with love & kindness will help the
woman find the Lord.

Wagner Questions: Human Cloning & Gene Editing
Group thoughts
The group was for the most part against human cloning & gene editing. However, the group can see good reasons as
to why some people would make use of these technologies.
Individual thoughts
Tracy, Nicolas, Morgan, Bavya, &Yusur found that human cloning to go against God’s creation
"'Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it...'" (Gen 1:28b)
Bavya & Yusur agreed that human cloning is dangerous especially in the wrong hands
"Therefore, what God has joined together, let no one separate." (Mark 10:9, ESV).
Nicolas does not agree with Bavya that science and religion are at odds, but states that particular people on
both sides are at odds
Nick further states that Science & Religion both believe that human cloning is dangerous & are working
towards the same goals
Science, in all aspects, is a gift from God which allows us to better understand His creation ("which from
the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ" (Eph 3:9)).
"Science can be used to spur creative and innovative theological thought" (Wagner 112).
Nick, Bavya, & Tracy agreed that gene editing works against God’s plan for us & is morally wrong
According to Sandel, "enhancement can be seen as the ultimate expression of the ethic of effort and
willfulness" which are "arrayed against the claims of giftedness [referring to the gift of life, pg 115]"
(Wagner 115-117).
Yusur & Morgan slightly disagree because gene editing (like CRSPR) can help cure many genetic diseases
& that God would want us to be able to cure ourselves because He originally designed us to be good &
healthy.
Conclusion
All members agree that both gene editing & human cloning have many dangerous implications & at the very
least should be restricted. However, the group understands that both technologies have potential benefits. The
group is unsure if science & religion have common goals.
Birth Control & HPV Vaccine
Group thoughts
Some members of the group find the use of birth control to be okay, however the men in our group stated otherwise,
which was quite interesting. However, the group unanimously agreed that HPV vaccines should be allowed.
Individual thoughts
Nicolas states that the use of birth control to prevent pregnancy goes against what God wants
"An important distinction should be made: the difference between repairing life to function naturally
and sustaining life artificially" (Geisler, 178).
Bavya, Morgan, & Tracy disagree & suggest that birth control can be used for medical reasons
Yusur thinks that a couple should discuss which or what birth control options that both feel
comfortable with
Tracy Barnet

Group 3 Summary Week 3-Sex
Morgan and Bavya agreed to an extent. They stated the decision should also involve a medical
professional
Nick also states that the use of birth control for the soul purpose of engaging in fornication is also
sinful
"But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are evident,
which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, ... and the like; of which I tell you
beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the
kingdom of God." (Gal 5:18-21)
Bavya, Morgan, Tracy & Nick agreed that parents should not deny their children the HPV vaccine
Yusur also agreed, but only after parents advised their children to practice abstinence
Bavya disagrees and thinks that it is a parent’s responsibility to protect their children from disease
regardless if they sin or not
. “for no one ever hated his flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church”
(Ephesians 5:29, ESV).
Conclusion
Everyone in the group agrees that the HPV vaccine should be administered & finds no ethical reason not to.
The group does think that parents should discuss abstinence with their children.
Sex Studies
Group thoughts
Everyone agrees that sex studies can be ethical if they do not lead people into temptation. However, the group
struggled to think of ways how sex studies could be conducted
Individual thoughts
Nick & Tracy both point out that sex studies that use married couples should be ethically okay
Bavya and Yusur questioned what exactly was being studied: the act itself, the views of sex, the anatomy?
Tracy thinks that these studies can lead to sexually immoral behavior
“Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge"
(Heb 13:4).
Conclusion
The group is now unsure if these studies can be conducted & find many Biblically ethical issues. There still are the
questions of study metrics & design.
Summary of Group Contributions
Each person in the group contributed equally by actively discussing each case study & question, formulating counter
arguments, and providing text & Biblical sources.
Nicolas initiated the discussion & provided most of the supporting information from the Wagner readings. Morgan
and Tracy helped organize the group thoughts. Yusur helped with the addition of Biblical sources and contributed a
good amount of insight to the HPV case study. Bavya presented arguments for the pornography case study and
organized our collective thoughts into a written summary.

JOURNAL ENTRIES INSTRUCTIONS
You will be required to write a Journal Entry about each module/week’s discussion. The Journal
Entry will be kept completely private and confidential between you and your instructor. In each
entry, you will summarize what was discussed in your own words, talk about the module/week’s
topics, and provide novel insight gained from the discussion. You must provide at least 1 citation
from the assigned Reading & Study material and at least 1 citation from the Bible. Each entry
must be 2,000–3,000 words.
Although you will be writing in a “journal,” do not simply state what you think. The goal of the
journal is for you to think about what others have said and how that fits with your understanding
of the topics. While you must demonstrate a biblical understanding of each topic, the goal is for
you to provide sound arguments for how to address each question and/or case study.
Since this journal is a private setting, you may write your entries in the first person, within
reason. The goal is to be pithy and thoughtful. Being concise with your words while addressing
each topic will be challenging, so give yourself plenty of time to formulate ideas and possible
rough drafts. Since your instructor will be the only person who will see your journal, you may
talk about what your classmates said in the discussion, as long as you do not attack them
personally. Remember: the most important rule throughout this entire course is no personal
attacks.
Each Journal Entry will be submitted in Blackboard in the space provided, not as a separate
Word document. Your instructor will not open any Journal Entries submitted as Word
documents. It is recommended that you craft your journal in Word but then copy and paste it into
Blackboard.
Each Journal Entry is due by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Sunday of the assigned module/week, except
Journal Entry 8. Journal Entry 8 is due by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Friday of Module/Week 8.

Human sexuality, Reproduction and Contraception in Biblical Context
Introduction
Human sexuality is a heavily discussed subject in religion and religious books, especially
in Christianity. The Bible has isolated sexual actives and behaviors into two categories; those
consider moral, and the ones consider immoral or sinful in terms of Christian values. Therefore
the Bible provides a reference when dealing with societal issues in terms of morality and ethics.
In our group discussions for the week, we deeply analyzed and discussed the several topical issues
touching on human sexually in the context of biblical ethics.
Pornographic videos
Pornographic videos and images have very adverse mental, emotional, and spiritual effects
on an individual and generally is sexual immorality and sin. I consider the introduction of
pornography in a marriage as being an act of adultery since the person watching will lust at the
actors in the videos. "But I tell you that anyone that looks at a woman lustfully has already
committed adultery with her in his heart" (Mathew 5:28, NIV). Also, pornography in itself is an
avenue to other sinful acts, such as masturbation and engagement in unnatural sexual activities
including anal sex.
At the group level, it was generally agreed that pornography hurts marriage. A marriage
union involves both mental faithfulness and physical faithfulness of both parties, and therefore
adultery can begin in mind. And since pornography entails a visual representation of sexual acts
that have the effect of distorting an individual's natural mental concept of sexual relationships, it'll
lead to mental unfaithfulness, which is an adulterous act and thus a sin. Another aspect of
pornography that came to the fore during our discussion is that recent studies and researches have
shown that pornography can be addictive, just like alcohol or other hard drugs. And this means
3
that people can be enslaved by it, whereas the Bible is against this kind of enslavement, and it
equates it to worshipping other gods.
Heavy Petting
As a group, we struggled with understanding and contextualizing whether heavy petting
should be considered unethical even though it doesn't involve actual virginal penetration. Tracy
and Morgan hold the school of thought that anything that leads to sexual stimulation and sexual
pleasure should be considered sinful when it's undertaken outside of the marriage setup.
According to Christian beliefs, which are guided by the Bible, any sexually related acts are
as good as sexual intercourse. Heavy petting, an act involving two people whereby they touch and
stimulate each other's sexual parts, is as immoral and sinful as having sex before marriage. "But
among you, there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of
greed, because these are improper for God's holy people" (Ephesians 5:3, NIV)
Same-Sex Marriage
Due to modernization, same-sex marriages have been gradually embraced by different
societies across the world, even though this goes against Christian teachings in the Bible. From
the creation story in Genesis, it is very evident what God's intentions were when it comes to human
reproduction and sexuality, that's why He created a male and a female. "But at the beginning of
creation, God' made them male and female'. For this reason, a man will leave his father and mother
and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. 'so they are no longer two, but one
flesh" (Mark10:6-8, NIV). "In the same way, the men also abandoned natural relations with women
and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men and
received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion." (Romans 1:27, NIV)
4
Also, same-sex marriage goes against one of the fundamental foundations of marriage,
which is procreation. This kind of marriage is against the will of God since He sent the man to
earth to reproduce and fill the earth. "God blessed them and said to them, 'Be fruitful and increase
in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and
over every living creature that moves on the ground." (Genesis1:28, NIV).
In my group engagement, some key notable factors to be taken into consideration in the
homosexuality subject is whether an individual's sexual orientation is an inborn human trait or is
something which is acquired later on life. If it's an inborn trait, then nobody should be judged on
it because the Bible also states that everyone is created in the image and likeness of God. The
consensus is that homosexuality is immoral and sinful in Christianity
Human Cloning and Gene Editing
Human cloning involves the artificial creation of a genetically identical copy of a human
being. From this, we can deduce that cloning involves a human creating another human being.
Human cloning goes against the will of God in the Bible in that it's only God who can give life,
and it's only Him who can take that life away. Thus cloning is akin to human playing God. Again,
in the Bible, the man was created in the image and likeness of God. "This is the written account of
Adam's Line. When God created man, He made him in the likeness of God" (Genesis 5:1, NIV).
This assertion from the Bible creates the ethical dilemma of whether a human clone will be said to
have been created in the image of God.
In our discussion, the biggest question was whether a human clone would have a soul. In
the Bible, a human is made up of a body and a soul, and Christians believe the soul enters the body
at conception. For the Human clone, there's no conception. Furthermore, will the clone has a soul
of its own, or it will share a soul with the body from which it was cloned. These fundamental
5
religious questions leave human cloning and Christianity in a very precarious position. This
position further supports the opinion that human cloning goes against Christianity and is sinful.
Gene editing is the science of altering an organism's DNA through addition, removal, or altering
of genetic materials, and this goes against the Bible, whereby it says the human body is the temple
of God. "Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you
have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God
with your body." (1Corinthians 6:19-20, NIV). The interpretation of this text is clear; an individual
is not supposed to temper with their body in whatever way, including gene editing, as this will
constitute a sinful an immoral act.
Birth Control and HPV Vaccine
Birth control has been a topical issue for the longest time, pitting science and religion.
Science has always advocated for birth control to manage the world's population to be within a
desirable and manageable figure. In contrast, religion, especially Christianity, has been against it
because it goes contrary to the teachings in the Bible and the will of God. In the Bible, God created
man and ordered him to go to earth and fill it. And this is the argument that Christians hold against
birth control. "As for you, be fruitful and increase in number: multiply on the earth and increase
upon it" (Genesis 9:7, NIV)
Other aspects of this birth control subject, which should be taken into consideration while
discussing its morality is the motive or reason for undertaking it as well as the methods through
which it can be undertaken. If birth control is undertaken by an individual to prevent pregnancy
on the medical ground, then it's okay and acceptable since even the Bible supports the preservation
of life. On the types of birth control methods, some such as hormonal pills and implants and
vasectomy involve the alteration of the normal functioning of the human body, which the Bible is
6
clearly against by saying that the human body is the temple of God and thus should not be tampered
with. However, there is no clarity on the morality of using barrier methods of birth control, such
as condoms and IDUs, which does not involve the alteration of the human body in any way. Even
though Christianity and the Bible are generally against birth control, it doesn't take into
consideration the modes through which the end goal of prevention of procreation is achieved.
The HPV vaccine is a preventive medication administered on young women and girls to
protect them from contracting human papillomavirus, which is known to spread through sexual
intercourse. The Catholic Church had for a while resisted the administration of this vaccine
because it's against the teachings in the holy book since it touches on the human reproductive
system as well as questioning its effectiveness against cervical cancer. I consider this stand as
being unwarranted since the HPV vaccine is similar to any other vaccination, the fact that it touches
on the human reproductive system notwithstanding. Through engagements at the group level all
the group members hold the idea and the stand that birth control and HPV vaccination are a
necessity and is morally acceptable if it’s undertaken for the right reasons.
Sex Studies
Sex education is as important as any other type of education. Sex education, or lack of it,
is the basis upon which individuals, both Christians, and non-Christians, make decisions that
directly affect their sexual lives. In my view, religion has been largely silent and fence-sitting in
matters of sex education. The bible advocates for the acquisitions of knowledge, although it doesn't
specify the type of knowledge which is acceptable and the one which isn't acceptable. "My people
are destroyed from lack of knowledge. ‘Because you have rejected knowledge, I also reject you as
my priests; because you have ignored the law of your God, I also will ignore your children." (Hosea
4:6, NIV)
7
From our engagement at the group, one thing that came out was that sex education was a
necessity like all the other forms of education. This education would enable individuals to make
the right choices concerning their sexuality. Lack of knowledge and education in things like
contraception and what constitutes sexual abuse leaves a lot of people in a very disadvantaged
position and thus prone to sexual abuse. People are not able to tell right from wrong and to know
when their rights are violated and the means through which they can seek legal redress.
The fundamental questions which come the fore in matters of sex education are at what
stage of human development education should be introduced and what exactly is to be thought.
The fear is that when this kind of education is introduced to the normal school curriculum, it may
encourage sexual immorality among the students. Also, settling on the type of content to be though
in sex education is a challenge because to tell what is too much or too little isn't easy. The best bet
is to integrate sex education with religious education because the religion and the Bible will help
in overcoming the ethical and moral dilemma of what is to be thought.
Taking into consideration all the issues discussed in this journal, it's evident that religion
and religious books such as the Bible plays a very big role in influencing our thoughts and
perspectives in life, behaviors, and decision making. The Bible also servers by providing moral
guidance, especially concerning subjects which otherwise we would be in a dilemma about what
is right and wrong. On the other hand, religion and religious books conflict with science and
research, especially on subjects that touch on the human body such as human cloning and gene
editing. Science and research are used to try and solve some human problems and challenges such
as overpopulation, but it faces a lot of resistance from Christianity and other religious groups. This
has led to the emergency of two conflicting worlds, religion, especially Christianity, which believe
8
God is the giver of life, and science, which holds the idea that human beings came into being
through evolution over time.
