Blood is the fluid of life, in which it transports “nutrients, oxygen, wastes, and hormones
throughout the body” (Detwiler et al., 2014). Blood contains living cells that allow for
nourishment and purification of the human body. Plasma, the “fluid component of blood”
(Detwiler et al., 2014), contains “proteins, hormones, nutrients and wastes, oxygen, and carbon
dioxide” (Detwiler et al., 2014), and these elements aid the functioning of blood in the body
through red blood cells (erythrocytes) and white blood cells (leukocytes). Oxygen is carried from
the lungs through the blood and transported to bodily tissues by erythrocytes, while leukocytes
help the body’s immune system in detecting and destroying infectious agents (Detwiler et al.,
2014). Excessive bleeding is prevented by platelets, which form clots “when blood vessels are
traumatically opened” (Detwiler et al., 2014). Blood keeps the human body functioning properly,
transporting nutrients to every cell and tissue that works to strengthen, cleanse, and nourish.
Therefore, blood is a living fluid that maintains important bodily functions needed for the
sustainment of human life.
In Leviticus 17:11, it is stated that “the life of the flesh is in the blood” (English Standard
Version Study Bible, 2001/2008), and that blood itself has been given the power of atonement.
This is so, because the Lord is the author of life, and His gift to mankind is the atonement for sin
which is found in the blood alone. Blood is a requirement for all living things; life cannot be
maintained without it. It is further stated in Leviticus 17:14 that “the life of every creature is its
blood: its blood is its life” (English Standard Version Study Bible, 2001/2008). In this regard,
blood is sacred and has been set aside by the Lord for the role of atonement, as expressed
through Jesus’ words in Matthew 26:28, where He informs the disciples that His blood is the
blood of the covenant, “which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins” (English
Standard Version Study Bible, 2001/2008). Christ’s blood has been set aside by the Lord as the
way of redemption for all people, with His blood being pure and powerful enough to atone for
every sin. The blood of Jesus is alive, and through the atonement of our soul, we are made alive
in Him. Ephesians 1:7 states, “In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of
our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace” (English Standard Version Study Bible,
2001/2008). Christ’s death was an atoning sacrifice, with His blood covering a multitude of sins
and allowing mankind an opportunity to find salvation and redemption through Him. Blood was
not only gifted to all creation as a life source by God, but it was also set aside as a source of
purification, salvation, and redemption through Christ.
