1. The bodily resurrection of Jesus is central to the sermons throughout Acts. Why is this so? Why is the
physical resurrection of Jesus such a vital teaching? What is its significance?
The bodily resurrection of Jesus is such an important aspect of each sermon in the book of Acts for a
couple of reasons. Peter starts out in Acts 2 by talking about the wonders and magnificence of Jesus
and his death, burial, resurrection, and ascension into Heaven. He uses these points as ways to explain
to the people how miraculous and amazing Jesus is. The physical resurrection of Jesus is such a vital
teaching because it emphasizes that he did not just die and leave us all hanging, but God raised him
from the dead and he now sits at the right hand of the father looking over us and guiding us through the
Holy Spirit. The resurrection is the most significant part of the Bible because every teaching and story
would be meaningless if Jesus stayed dead. In Acts 2, it says, "Those who accepted his message were
baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day" (Acts 2, NIV), which is such a
profound verse because it demonstrates just how powerful the message of the resurrection is.
2. The exaltation of Jesus to the right hand of the Father is a key element in Peter’s speeches in Acts 2
and 5. What is the significance of Jesus’ position at the Father’s right hand in relation to prophecy,
authority, and His ongoing ministry?
Being at the right hand of God is Jesus being right with God and sitting in a place of honor. Jesus
withstood so many obstacles, tribulation, and scrutiny while on earth, but God assured Jesus that he
would get through it and be Lord and Messiah. I think we as Christian often find ourselves in similar
situations as Jesus was, not to the extent that he was mocked and ridiculed, but the same situation. We
get mocked for having faith and putting our hope in God and while it may be hard to see it sometimes,
we will be rewarded and honored for enduring the trials. We should not deny God, but delight in his
promises and love that he has for us. This is so significant in relation to prophecy because God said he
would dwell at His right hand and it happened! The apostles share the ascension story as a way to bring
people to know Jesus. While Jesus is still sitting at the right hand of the father, that does not mean he is
not present in our lives. Jesus and the Holy Spirit are constantly present and with us by intervening on
behalf of us in times of weakness and they are with us in times of joy! The textbook says, "Shortly after
this, Peter would associate the ascension with Jesus’ exaltation, as He took His rightful and deserved
place at the right hand of God" ( Ger, p. 27), which demonstrates just how the Peter and the apostles
felt about Jesus being at the right hand of God because it was absolutely rightful and deserved.

RESPONSE: Aren’t ridicule and shame and violence all of the same treatments that the martyrs
endured in the Bible? Moreover, faith is based in believing in what might seem unbelievable. In
this case, the resurrection story is especially vital because believing in Christ’s resurrection is the
path to salvation. Because God gave Christ the “victory” of defeating death with his return, he
also gave him the power to grant human beings the promise of our own eventual salvation for
believing in this great miracle and maintaining our unwavering faith. When Christ returns in the
second coming, this belief promises us resurrection as well, and that “we shall reign with [Christ]
for a thousand years” in a world with no more death after the defeat of Satan and his followers
(Ger, p. 6).

RESPONSE: You are absolutely correct when you talk about how amazing Jesus is in taking up
the throne and bringing us his love through God. Peter talks about how Jesus is sitting at God’s
right hand, which is where we get the saying “right hand man”. You might remember that there
is also the Gospel of Matthew parable where Jesus puts sheep on his right hand and goats on the
left (Ger, p. 33). Jesus being on the right side of God means that he is God’s emissary. It makes
sense that you mention the fact that numbers of Christians increased because of the power in the
resurrection, seeing as defeating death to bring us salvation is Jesus’ greatest accomplishment. I
think Peter speaks to the magnificence of Jesus because it is so hard for others to have that faith,
but his ministry is ongoing, and he is bringing the story and the faith to these converts (which is
also our mission on Earth).
