1. What is the significance of Stephen’s dying vision of Jesus as Son of Man, standing at
the right hand of the Father? Consider both elements in your answer: the designation
(Son of Man) and the posture (standing, rather than sitting, at the Father’s side).
There is significance to both Jesus’ designation and posture in Stephen’s vision at the
end of his speech to the Sanhedrin. To begin, the title Son of Man was Jesus’ preferred
self-designation; He used this title to refer to Himself throughout the Gospels [1]. In fact,
the designation Son of Man was only spoken originally (without quotation, John 12:34)
one time not by Jesus in the New Testament, and it was by Stephen in his speech [2].
The designation Son of Man draws from Old Testament Scripture, linking Jesus to the
prophecy of Daniel 7:13-14 [3]. This prophecy referred to “a” Son of Man that would rule
as king eternally. Jesus recognized His fit within this prophecy and claimed the title of
“the”, one and only, Son of Man. So, when Stephen stated to have seen the Son of Man
to the Sanhedrin (Acts 7:56), they likely all knew of the title from the referenced prophecy
in the Book of Daniel.
Before Stephen, Jesus too was at His trial before the Sanhedrin [4] (Matt. 26:57-67).
Jesus’ final words to the Sanhedrin were that they would “see the Son of Man sitting at
the right hand of power, and coming on the clouds of heaven” (Matt. 26:64). Because
Jesus said this, the Sanhedrin knew specifically who Stephen claimed to have seen. This
is why those of the Sanhedrin were so enraged (Acts 7:57); they knew they had Jesus
killed, so it was blasphemous to them that Stephen could see Him. Stephen’s use of
choosing the designation Son of Man connects his trial to Jesus’, and it reminds the
Sanhedrin of Jesus, the one they falsely accused.
In addition to significance in the designation of Jesus in Stephen’s vision, there is
significance in His posture. Stephen states that he saw the Son of Man “standing at the
right hand of God” (Acts 7:56). It is important to note that this is the only time in Scripture
where Jesus is recorded to have been standing, not sitting, at God’s right hand [5]. In
analysis of this, Jesus was likely standing in a display of embrace for Stephen. Standing
for someone, even in today’s culture, is a form of welcoming. Stephen was the first
Christian martyr. It was a huge step within the church, enough to move Jesus into a
standing position. For Stephen, seeing the Son of Man standing for him must have given
him much assurance before dying for His name. In regards to the position of Jesus at
God’s right hand, I interpreted this in my discussion board two post; it is a representation
of Jesus’ authority and holiness, and it is a fulfillment of prophecy (Psa. 110:1). Stephen’s
vision of Jesus just before his death was an incredible one, and as I have pointed out,
His designation and posture in Acts 7:56 have importance in the story of Acts.
2. Cornelius is described in Acts 10 as devout, fearing God, and prayerful. Indeed, God
took note of his good works and heard his prayers. Why was it necessary for Peter to
preach the gospel to him?
Even though Cornelius was a devout, God-fearing man, it was still necessary for him to
receive the Gospel message. Cornelius’s conversion is the longest story in Acts [6], and
that is a sign of its importance within Acts as a whole. There are several verses of
Scripture from Jesus Himself that confirm the claim that Cornelius needed to hear the
Gospel. The primary verse that comes to my mind is John 14:6, “I am the way, and the
truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father except through Me.” So, since the Savior
had already arrived and was resurrected, there was a need for people to know Christ for
salvation. Following this verse, Jesus also states, “apart from Me you can do nothing”
(John 15:5). These verses solidify the importance of following Jesus. Cornelius prayed
and was charitable, so he was seen by the Lord as worthy of hearing the Gospel (Acts
10:4).
By sending Peter, God was rewarding Cornelius, his family and loved ones for their faith.
This is evidence to the Lord’s nature of accepting anyone who fears and obeys Him [7].
God’s promise to Abraham in Genesis 12:3 to bless all the families of the earth through
him was being fulfilled. The Savior, Jesus, an ancestor of Abraham, was to be spread to
all the nations. Still today, we must continue to spread His name. “If you confess with
your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead,
you will be saved” (Rom. 10:9). Being that the gospel of Jesus Christ is fundamental to
salvation, it was necessary for Cornelius and other gentiles to receive it.
