Passage: Acts19:11-22
What points of application can be made using the “Four Questions for Application?” State and
explain 1 point of application for each of these four questions. Your explanation for each of these
points should be 1 paragraph (200-300 words) in length, clearly connected to a part of this
passage (by way of a verse quotation and/or citation), specific to this passage, and relevant.
A. TheQuestion ofDuty
The remarkable impact that Paul's persistent devotion to his divine calling had on the
people of Ephesus is revealed in Acts 19:11–22. Paul was a man of great courage and conviction.
His persistent dedication to his mission, aided by the Holy Spirit, serves as a powerful example
for us to consider our sense of duty and responsibility, particularly in matters of faith and service.
Verse 21 highlights Paul's determination to travel to Jerusalem despite anticipating challenges.
This illustrates his strong commitment to fulfilling his divine mission and serves as a powerful
example for us to evaluate our dedication to our responsibilities from God. Paul's actions show
that meeting our obligations from God requires not just a willingness to serve but also a
readiness to endure difficulties. Reflecting on Paul's determination challenges us to examine how
we approach our spiritual responsibilities, engage in selfless service, and fulfill our God-given
purposes with unwavering determination.
B. Question ofCharacter
In Acts 19:11-22, we witness the profound strength of Paul's faith and the significant role
it plays in his life. His unwavering faith enabled him to perform miracles. Unlike the Seven Sons
of Sceva, who lacked faith in God and Jesus, leading to a failed exorcism. Their actions revealed
their lack of genuine belief in Jesus. This highlights the transformative power of faith. Paul's true
character is demonstrated through the miracles he performs and the healing of the lame. Through
his immense faith, others placed their trust in him, believing in his ability to heal through cloth
that had touched his skin. Those who have faith in God are rewarded, especially those who
believe without reservation. Paul's strong faith in God allowed him to perform miraculous deeds.
Acts 19:11-12 describes how "God was performing extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul,
so that even handkerchiefs or aprons that had touched his skin were carried away to the sick, and
their diseases vanished, and evil spirits were driven out of them" (Bible Getaway, 2024).
Reflecting on Acts, we are reminded of Acts 3:16, where faith in the name of Jesus healed a man

and brought about perfect health. Strength to accomplish great deeds comes from having faith in
God
C. TheQuestion ofGoals.
Acts 19:11-22 presents a powerful narrative of the spread of Christianity in Ephesus,
highlighting several key themes and goals. The primary objective is clearly the propagation of
the Gospel and the establishment of Jesus Christ's authority. This is achieved through God's
extraordinary miracles performed through Paul, which serve to validate the message and
demonstrate divine power. The story of the seven sons of Sceva illustrates the superiority of
genuine faith over magical formulas, leading to a climate of fear and reverence among both Jews
and Greeks. A pivotal moment occurs when new believers publicly burn their expensive sorcery
scrolls, symbolizing a complete break from their former practices and a full commitment to their
new faith. This act not only represents a spiritual transformation but also highlights the
significant economic cost of their decision. Throughout the passage, Paul's loyal commitment to
his mission is evident, as is the transformative power of true faith in the lives of the converts.
The narrative also touches on the theme of opposition, foreshadowing the challenges the growing
Christian movement would face, as seen in the mention of the silversmith Demetrius. Ultimately,
the passage concludes with the triumphant spread of the word of the Lord, growing both in
extent and in power. This story serves as an encouragement to believers, urging them to remain
devoted to their faith, be willing to make sacrifices for their beliefs, and trust in God's power to
overcome false teachings and opposition.
D. TheQuestion ofDiscernment
Acts 19:13–16, which describes the incident involving the sons of Sceva, emphasizes
how important discernment is when handling spiritual matters. The devil emphasizes in his reply,
"I know about Paul and Jesus, but who are you?" Developing a deep relationship with Jesus is
more important for discernment than merely knowing facts about Him. It is our duty as
Christians to practice wisdom and discernment, to learn to discern between sincere spiritual
experiences and flimsy acts of devotion. This entails strengthening one's relationship with God
via prayer, studying God's word, and seeking the Holy Spirit's direction. In the field of
spirituality, discernment is necessary for wise and insightful decision-making as well as for
avoiding deception based onsuperficial appearances.
