Passage: Acts 9:36-43
A. How does this passage from Acts fit within the metanarrative of the Bible? State what
type of story you believe this to be (creation, fall, redemption, or new creation) and
explain why you believe this to be so? Your explanation should be 1 paragraph (200-300
words) in length. It may be good to review chapter six in Everyday Bible Study in order to
recall what each of these four themes are about.
The passage from Acts 9:36-43 would fit within the redemption metanarrative of the Bible,
which is also death. Two men were sent to Lydda to get Peter and bring him back to help Tabitha.
Once these men found Peter, he knew it was the Holy Spirit working in the form of them and
goes back to Joppa. Once Peter arrives, he knelt and prayed over Tabitha. This was an act of
redemption from God through the power of prayer. “The thread that connects the Old and New
Testament together is God’s plan of redemption through the person and work of Jesus Christ”
(Cartwright and Hulshof pg. 171). We learn in the passage that Tabitha is a believer, or disciple,
of Christ and she spent her life helping those in need and doing good works and this is shown
when God, through Peter, revived her from the dead. Once the news of the miracle had spread,
many people became believers. Peter knew that he was being led by the Holy Spirit to come to
Joppa and show the people the miracle of the Lord. He now has many people who are believers,
and he can minister them to follow the Lord and become disciples.
B. How does your principle from Acts 9:36-43 fit with the rest of the Scripture? This
principle is the one you have written out in 1-3 sentences in the Interpretation section. If
your principle is a true Biblical principle, it will be reflected throughout the
Scriptures. Where is the principle discovered in this New Testament narrative found
elsewhere in the Scriptures? Your explanation should be 1 paragraph (200-300 words) in

The principal in Acts 9:36-43 could be that those who are faithful to the Lord will in return have
the Lord watch over them and protect them. There are many times throughout the Bible that the
Lord shows us, that if we just believe and trust in Him, He will always make a way. One example
of this can be found in Genesis 22. God said, “Take your son, your only son, whom you love—
Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I
will show you.” Abraham followed God’s commands and went up the mountain. Just as he was
about to sacrifice his only son, God said “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do
anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your
son, your only son.” The Lord also said “I swear by myself, declares the Lord, that because you
have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, 17 I will surely bless you and

make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your
descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies, 18 and through your offspring[b]
all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.” The Lord blessed Abraham
because he was willing to sacrifice his only son to show he was a true disciple of the Lord. Just
like Peter followed the Holy Spirit to Tabitha and was able to awake her. Tabitha showed that she
was a true follower of the Lord by the good works she has done (Genesis 22:1-19).
C. How does this passage from Acts reflect the person and work of Jesus Christ? State and
explain at least one way that the principle of this passage identifies something of the
person and work of Jesus Christ. Your explanation should be 1 paragraph (200-300
words) in length. Be specific. List, explain, and cite your supporting passage(s) from
Scripture.
The passage from Acts shows the person Jesus Christ is by showing his works through over
people. Jesus has performed many miracles, curing the ill and rising the dead. The passage shows
that Peter performed the miracle of rising Tabitha from the dead, just as Jesus raised Jairus’
daughter from the dead. “Jesus said to Jairus, “Don't be afraid; just believe, and she will be
healed.” They walked into the house, and everyone was sure that the daughter was dead, but “He
took her by the hand and said, 'My child, get up!' Her spirit returned, and at once she stood up.”
Jairus believed in the Lord and his daughter was able to be healed. Peter was able to heal Tabitha
the same way that Jesus raised the daughter, because Tabitha was too, a believer. There are many
examples throughout the Bible that show person and work that Jesus Christ does himself and
through the work of his Disciples.
