Passage: Acts 19:11-22
A. I have read Acts 19:11-22 in both a formal translation (NASB, NRSV, ESV, or CSB)
and a functional translation (NIV, NLT, or NCV). Highlight the correct answer. Please
use the translation provided in your digital library or found at Biblegateway.com
oYes
oNo
B. Having read the passage in both formal and functional translation, list at least 2 similarities
and 3 differences between the way both translations cover this story. These similarities and
differences should be related to the text itself rather than the translation. For example, an
observation like, “The formal translation is harder to read” is not an acceptable observation
because it deals with the translation itself rather than the text. You may list as many
similarities and differences that you find providing that you meet the minimum amount for
each one.
1. Similarity – Both translations we continue to see read about the miraculous miracles
that were being done by Paul. For example, healing the sick casting out demon.
NASB & NIV even by Paul touching the handkerchiefs and aprons the people were
still being healed and demons had to come out.
2. Similarity – Both translations in verse 17 you read similarity there too regarding the
Jews and Greeks in Ephesus and how they were gripped by fear by what they were
experienced and how the name of Jesus has Power and Authority.
3. Difference – Differences in these translations the NIV is the verse broken down in a
way for others to simplify, but with the NASB you can read that the passage is a
little longer with more dep and a broader detail.
4. Difference – Differences in these translations in verse 16 in the NIV is states that
the evil spirits jumped on them and overpowered them all. NASB says that the evil
spirits pounced on them and subdued all of them.

5. Difference - The NASB uses the word extraordinary to explain the miracles God
performed through Paul, while the NIV uses the word remarkable.
