Passage: Acts 9:36-43
A. How does this passage from Acts fit within the metanarrative of the Bible? State what
type of story you believe this to be (creation, fall, redemption, or new creation) and
explain why you believe this to be so? Your explanation should be 1 paragraph (200-300
words) in length. It may be good to review chapter six in in order toEveryday Bible Study
recall what each of these four themes are about.
Acts 9:36-43 fits into the metanarrative of the Bible as a redemptive story. Redemption is an
overarching theme in the Bible as God’s plan to restore humanity and all creation to its sinless
state. The story of Peter and Tabitha is a redemptive story in several different ways. First, it
shows God’s power to literally bring life out of death. Acts 9:40, says, “he said, “Tabitha, get
up.” She opened her eyes and seeing Peter she sat up.” This is a clear example of how God
brings literal life from death. All throughout the Bible we see God’s plan to redeem humans from
sin which includes death and decay and here we can see an example of how God did exactly that,
redeemed Tabitha from death and brought her back to life. The next way this story shows the
redemptive theme of the Bible is by sharing the gospel. Acts 9:42 says, “This became known all
over Joppa, and many people believed in the Lord.” This is important because it shows people
finding salvation in God and ultimately being redeemed because of it. Tabitha’s resurrection
helped show that her faith in God was not in vain, that God was watching over her and ultimately
used her as a vice to save a lot of lost people.
B. How does your principle from Acts 9:36-43 fit with the rest of the Scripture? This
principle is the one you have written out in 1-3 sentences in the Interpretation section. If
your principle is a true Biblical principle, it will be reflected throughout the
Scriptures. Where is the principle discovered in this New Testament narrative found
elsewhere in the Scriptures? Your explanation should be 1 paragraph (200-300 words) in
length. Be specific. List, explain, and cite your supporting passage(s) from Scripture.
Acts 9:36-43 shows the power of prayer within the life of believers, especially within verse 40
where it says, “Peter sent them all out of the room; then he got down on his knees and prayed.”

Peter prays and right after this Tabitha is resurrected. This is an amazing principle as the power
of prayer, within the life of a believer, can be clearly seen in stories like this all throughout
scripture. Some examples of where this can be seen elsewhere in scripture are 1 Samuel 1:11
where Hannah who is barren, pleaded with God and was given her son Samuel. As well as Acts
12:5, Peter is in prison when the church prays for his release. This story is incredible as Peter is
bound by chains and guarded by sentries. An angel came to the cell, the chains fell off his hands
and Peter followed the angel out of the prison. Other examples can be seen in verses like 2 Kings
19:19, Mark 5:23, Exodus 33:18 and many more. All these stories lead to the important idea that
God listens to his people. And that if the Lord wills, amazing things will and can be done through
the power of prayer.
C. How does this passage from Acts reflect the person and work of Jesus Christ? State and
explain at least one way that the principle of this passage identifies something of the
person and work of Jesus Christ. Your explanation should be 1 paragraph (200-300
words) in length. Be specific. List, explain, and cite your supporting passage(s) from
Scripture.
This passage reflects the person and work of Jesus Christ by showing His power as well as His
love and compassion for people. Jesus’ power is clearly seen in the resurrection of Tabitha. This
miracle can only point to the power of Jesus, not only His power to give literal life to the dead,
but to give eternal life through salvation in Him. This is seen in verses like John 3:16, “For God
so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but
have eternal life.” Or John 11:25-26, “Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life.
Whoever believed in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in
me shall never die.’” We have eternal life through the power of Christ. This passage in Acts also
shows the love Christ has for His people. Tabitha as told in Acts 9:36 is known for her good
works. By raising her from the dead Jesus shows his love and compassion for Tabitha knowing
that on earth she will continue to do the good work and share the gospel of Jesus. Not only that
but she will be able to use this story of her death and resurrection to bring more people to
Salvation.
