Step 4—Ask the Key Questions and Observe Other Structural or Grammatical Elements
Observations related to “Who?”
•An essential figure in the Books of Genesis, Joseph, was the first-born son to
Jacob, through Rachel. Joseph was full brother of Benjamin; and is the half-
brother of 11 Older siblings: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, Naphtali,
Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulun & Dinah.
•Minor characters to joseph’s story would include Potiphar and Pharaoh.
Observations related to “What?” (separated into three areas)
•“What” trails did Joseph face: He was sold into slavery, bought by
Potipher later imprisoned by him.
•“What” did Joseph do: He had a gift to interpret dreams.
•“What” was Joseph rewarded with: 1st he was head of Potiphers house hold
until imprisoned. 2nd Pharaoh made him his Vizier over Egypt, gave him a
wife who bore him 2 sons, he was reunited with his family. Joseph was
extremely profitable in the land of Egypt.

serving in Potiphers home.

•Joseph was brought to Pharaoh at 30.
•In 7 years of Plenty Joseph was given new name, a wife, two sons
•2yrs into famine he is reunited with his family and moves them to Goshen.
Where they remained the rest of their days.
Observations related to “Why?”
•Because of Jacob’s favoritism shown to Joseph, his elder half-brothers
were jealous of him only to be made worse when Joseph reveals his dream.
Thus, they rid themselves of him.
•One could also say as Joseph said, “You intended to harm me, but God intended
it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.” (Gen
50:20). Thus, it was the Lords will.
Observations related to “How?”
•“How” did Joseph preserver his trails: He refused to turn away from God. He
did not allow the unfortunate events that had befallen him to affect the out
comes of his life; he simply made the best of a bad situation.
•“How” did he come to high status: By using his gift of interpreting dreams,
being diligent and hardworking, being a faithful servant to God, Potipher,

Step 7—How Does This Character’s Life Reflect Other Truths Found in the Scriptures?
•How does the character you have studied fit within the collection of characters recorded

of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken.
o(James 1:2-4) When all kinds of trials and temptations crowd into your lives my
brothers, don’t treat them as intruders, but welcome them as friends! Realize that
they come to test your faith and to produce in you the quality of endurance. But
let the process go on until that endurance is fully developed, and you will find you
have become men of mature character with the right sort of independence.
•Do the verses contain a promise that is eventually fulfilled by Christ?
oThat the house of Joseph will come to the promise land
•How is your Bible character a part of this promise and fulfillment?
oJoseph is part of the 12 tribes.
•Are there ways in which your character failed but in which we see Christ succeed?
oWhen Joseph’s brothers appeared in Egypt, I believe he held some anger, which
