Description
“Napoleon Crossing the Alps” is a painting illustrating a portrait symbolizing authority
where Napoleon is shown as a refined stallion. The artwork shows a mountain before him to the
left with a natural background of largely obscured rocks. His gloveless right arm points to the
invisible summit, connected physically with the background setting that echoes the mountain
slopes. The line of his clock forms various diagonals along with the slopes of the ridge. The
background theme and objects demonstrate the setting of a hero. For instance, Napoleon is
carved beside other names, including Charlemagne and Hannibal (Pollitt). Napoleon and the
Horse occupies the largest scale of the artwork. There are strong diagonal lines that give the
painting tension and motion. “Napoleon Crossing the Alps” has diagonal lines that represent the
active movement of Napoleon and his horse. The color theme is earthy and natural, which
combines with these gesture lines to set the mood and feeling of heroism. The shape is set shapes

Analysis

Informed Judgement
My thoughts and feelings about “Napoleon Crossing the Alps” have not changed since
the first impression; when I first saw the perspective of heroism and power came to my mind. I
was first excited by the texture and color theme of the painting, particularly the background
images and shape of the objects in the painting. A lesson from the analysis is about the choice of
material and artistic work. As such, by analyzing “Napoleon Crossing the Alps,” I learned that
neoclassical painters had the skills and knowledge to design artwork. I have also realized that
artists in the neoclassical era used materials, including texture, color, and themes, as well as the
use of Images and objects in the painting, and can be used in future work.
