The question of what is art, is unique to each person. However, in my opinion, art is
how one expresses themselves. And that can be done in many ways, whether it be through
physical art such as, painting, drawing, sculpting, and many other forms, but for me
personally my form of art is fashion. I chose to convey who I am through the clothes, shoes,
and accessories that I wear. Carolina Herrera said, “The difference between fashion and art is
that fashion is art in movement.” Savio Fonseca said “Fashion is art and you are the canvas.”
Art is anything that can be created, and that can evoke emotion, whether that be sadness, joy,
excitement.
I grew up being told that I could wear what I want, and that it is the purest form of
revealing yourself to others. I love wearing bright colors and animal prints, because I am a
very boisterous and bold person, so my outfits reflect that. I get mixed emotions and opinions
about how I dress, much like artists do about their work. I get complimented, but I also
receive confused glances. I do not wear things that are commonly worn by people my age,
but that is my favorite part. I spent so much of my child trying to mimic people I admired, but
the problem with that was that it was not me. It was not until late into my sophomore year of
high school that I began dressing for myself rather than to impress those around me.
Therefore, the glances and the confusion, they no longer bother me. I wear what makes me
feel good and I do not do it for the approval of anyone anymore.
Art can be both loud and obvious or soft and subtle. The most important aspect of art
is how the artist feels about what they have created. Galatians 1:10 says, “For am I now
seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to
please man, I would not be a servant of Christ” (English Standard Version Bible, 2019). We
as Christians are called away from seeking the approval of others. The one and only true
judge is Jesus Christ. We are to live our lives admonishing and glorifying Him in all that we
do, including art.
