2. While there may have been a decrease in unionization in the United States, there is a continued
need for business leaders to be proactive in addressing some of the needs of their employees.
Some of the needs identified include equal pay, elder and/or childcare and increases in benefits.
To what extent do businesses and government agencies have a duty to provide additional benefits
to employees beyond fair pay and good working conditions?
I believe that business leaders and corporations etc. need to provide their employers with some
benefits. Depending on what kind of job they are doing should determine what kind of benefits
they receive. “The organized labor literature finds that the presence of labor unions influences a
firm's corporate finance and financial reporting decisions. In particular, the management of a
unionized firm has an incentive to withhold information from the capital markets to preserve its
bargaining power when negotiating with the unions.” (Aobdia). Some of the major issues that
have been going on in the past and still is today is equal pay. People have problems with not
getting paid the same as everyone when they are doing the same job. I do believe it is not right
giving someone $80,000 when their co-work is making $10k to $15k more then them. I get
sometimes you have to start off a little lower sometimes and get a raise from there but that is not
all businesses. “we find that non-unionized firms increase their disclosures and provide more
good news in the year of their unionized rivals’ contract renegotiations relative to the amount of
disclosures and good news in adjacent years.” (Aobdia). It is important that respect others with
the work that they help put into their companies and pay them what they deserve. It seems like
some jobs will put in clause that their workers can not discuss pay and I think in my opinion its
to hide this issue. A good insurance company through the job should also be given because it is
hard for someone to find a great insurance that does not cost them an arm in a leg for themselves
and their families. Employers should have a great working conditions and environment because
that is the least they can do for the people working for them. If it was not for these workers doing
their job then the company would be no longer. Each person has a key importance and it is vital
that the leaders understand an always hear out what their employers’ questions and concerns
maybe. “
