Lecture 2
Making ASU your 2nd home is an intriguing lecture that presents information regarding
out of state students and their success within the college. Dr. Correa talked about context of out
of state student at ASU. Out of states experiences and how ASU can be your second home and
you can thrive from it. Dr. Correa talked about his experiences about being an out of state student
from Florida to Michigan, gave a story about how he was prepared for independence but in
reality, when he arrived in Michigan he immediately felt home sick. In addition, he brought upon
statistics which showed where out of states students typically migrated, and where they ended up
living. Arizona states out of states student typically migrate from other states across the nation
into Arizona and end living in Arizona after they graduate. He then describes how residents from
out of state have been growing steadily and tremendously since 2002. Arizona state has also had
an incredible increase of international students, approximately 414% growth in the last 13 years
for international students. Dr. Correa also touches on the reason why out of state student travel
out of state for a university. Reasons such as revenue, diversity, recognition and prestige.
Revenue plays an effect because out of state students generate more revenue than instate
students, and a higher revenue for a corporation like Arizona State University means better
facilities and great professors/staff. Second reason is diversity, this benefits at ASU students

because a greater diversity means you meet new people from different networks and you can
broaden your horizon by networking with certain people you meet. It is also a benefit for when
you want to apply for a job by showing that you are willing to work with diverse backgrounds
within the workforce. The final reason is recognition and prestige when more diverse students
come to ASU that means they came here with a high academic program. As more diverse
students come with these kinds of profiles then that makes the university better. Therefore, your
degree will have more value. Out of state students and international students are the back bone of
Arizona State University.
All in all, Dr. Correa brings upon many unique studies on why being an out of state
students is a positive thing and that you should be proud and comfortable to be away from home.
Out of state students should put this information in prospective. As a first-generation college
student, I can relate with everything that has been brought upon his research regarding successes
with diversity within the university. As I was growing up within the United states unfamiliar with
the culture, I found myself feeling alone and needing for friends. Over time I placed myself in
situations where I’d be forced with many different people within school. Many United States
born citizens were very fascinated by my ethnic background and the culture. After a while it
made it easier to make friends.
After watching this video, I found myself impressed with the information that Dr. Correa
had found within culture, diversity, and out of state students. The video also did a phenomenal
job with making out of state students feel comfortable with staying at Arizona State University
and that their presents within the University makes a tremendous impact with, revenue, diversity,
and recognition within prestige. As Arizona State grows it will find itself with a tremendous
