The knowledge of growth and development is essential in early childhood care and
education as it helps the carers to provide care that is developmentally appropriate to the age and
stage of the children. This understanding enables the caregiver to develop age-sensitive sessions,
define probable behavioral patterns and identify potential cases of developmental learning
differences (Click & Parker, 2010). For instance, a caregiver who knows that children of two
years of age have little control over their impulses will not get annoyed with the child as they fail
to share toys. It also helps the caregivers to create the right conditions to enable the child to
receive the appropriate stimulation and support necessary for the child's well-being.
Some of the personal qualities that effective caregivers should demonstrate include
patience, empathy, communication and the development understanding. According to Click &
Parker (2010), children's learning rate differs and this may demand consistent directions, thus the
need to exercise patience. Empathy helps the caregivers to identify with the child, and the child
feels that someone knows and understands what they are going through. This emotional security
is crucial in enabling children to grow, learn and be able to interact with other children and adults
positively (Click & Parker, 2010). Practical reasoning and communication skills are important
not only for the purpose of communicating with a child at the right developmental level, but also
for reporting to parents and working with other childcare workers or officials dealing with the
child.
Finally, flexibility and passion for working with children are the other important
qualities. Students have different personalities, approaches to learning, and socioeconomic
background. A good caregiver is capable of responding to these differences in an appropriate
manner, depending on the child in question. Furthermore, the passion that a caregiver has for the
kids is manifested by dynamism, ideas and passion to work with the children (Click & Parker,

2010). This passion for their work ensures that caregivers are always cheerful and engaging with
kids, even sometimes that may seem tough to deal with, and that's how children learn that
education is fun and that it's good to care for others.
