In the modern day, healthcare leaders encounter various ethical challenges. Handling these
problems necessitates the implementation of efficient strategies that are ethical and prioritize all
stakeholders. This paper explores the political issue of the scenario, elucidating effective and
ethical ways to handle it and applicable skills that can be utilized.
Political Issues in the Scenario
The main political concern in this scenario is the possibility of a survey for noncompliance
because of the do-not-resuscitate (DNR) orders authorized by an absent family member.
Specifically, a family member has aired a grievance regarding the resident's DNR order that the
Power of Attorney of another family member had allowed. Further, this individual also threatens
to have a survey done at the facility because of noncompliance if needs are not met. The
concerns in this situation are intimidation and require profound analysis of the ethical
consequences before acting.
How I would effectively and ethically handle the situation
Nora et al. (2016) note that while handling conflicts, comprehensively understanding the
situation is the initial step and must be prioritized. The next phase will entail explaining the
authorized and ethical implications of the DNR orders and the importance of following these to
protect the resident's rights. In addition, I will evaluate to ascertain that my medical facility
complies with the DNR orders and that all components of these orders have been respected. If I
discover that the facility does not comply with the DNR orders, I will take the required steps to
rectify the issue and ascertain that residents' rights are followed.
Furthermore, it is essential to consider the implications of my actions in this scenario. All
decisions made will be entirely based on ethical contemplations to ascertain the rights of all
people are respected. I will consider the potential repercussions of my decisions and ensure that
all verdicts I make are in the best interest of the residents in the facility. Explaining which
particular choices were made is crucial to ensure every party involved comprehends why every
decision was made (Nora et al., 2016). Thus, I will also maintain open communication with all
stakeholders to ascertain that everyone knows the decisions made.
Applying two (2) conflict management skills
The two primary conflict management skills I would apply in this scenario are active listening
and empathy. Active listening refers to being ready to listen, observing the verbal and non-verbal
messages sent, and offering suitable feedback on the message presented. I will utilize this vital
conflict management skill to ascertain that all parties in this scenario have a chance to express
their issues. Through active listening, leaders can eliminate all misconstructions and
communicate viewpoints between the other parties involved (Jonsdottir & Fridriksdottir, 2020).
Active listening will also lead to a mutual understanding between the parties involved.
3
Alternatively, empathy will also be vital in this scenario. Empathy refers to the ability to take on
another individual’s outlook, comprehend, feel, and potentially share and reply to their
experience (Klimecki, 2019). Showing empathy will also ascertain that all parties in this scenario
feel heard and respected. By thoroughly understanding the viewpoints of all parties in this
scenario, I will better understand the situation, provide verdicts, and make decisions that benefit
the resident, family, and the facility.
In conclusion, this paper has discussed the political issue in the given scenario and explained
how I would effectively tackle it. It is vital to contemplate the potential repercussions of the
choices made and ascertain that they prioritize the interests of the individuals involved in this
scenario. This situation can be efficiently handled through active listening and empathy.
Generally, these practices are important and should be prioritized by healthcare administrators
while handling political issues in healthcare.
