The topic biopsychosocial assessment analysis establishes the core foundation of the social work
practice in the community. Such assessments are also integral aspects of the social work industry
across different disciplines, including health and education. Additionally, understanding these
concepts is crucial in integrating other elements, such as social justice and diversity, to ensure
better service provision to the community. This topic has immense significance in the social
work sector, considering that its application is applicable across all sectors of human service and
within different age groups. Similarly, exploring these concepts could improve social work's
implications in the education sector, as it is among the significant areas that require considerable
services to tackle various challenges. As a result, this paper focuses on analyzing a previously
completed biopsychosocial assessment while utilizing and integrating concepts learned during
the course, thus recognizing the necessity of social work practices and roles in the community.
Identity, issues, and engagement
The assessment setting took place at an elementary school in a licensed social worker's office.
The client was Deshawn Tate, who, at the time of the assessment, was ten years old. Notably, the
child's ethnicity is black. Additionally, the client had a good relationship with his family, which
included his mother, sister, and stepfather. Deshawn demonstrated little interest in engaging in
community activities as he enjoyed his entertainment by playing games in his room. The
problem identified was school suspension, which was attributed to increased school absenteeism.
Deshawn mentioned that he fought a lot in school, which was also one of the reasons the school
suspended him on various occasions. The diagnosis made during the session involved
information gathering from the client to help understand them better and provide exemplary
social service. Based on the assessment, there were no services provided as the client did not
demonstrate any extreme behaviours or challenges that may impact their psychological well-
being.
Proper client engagement is essential during the assessment sessions as it provides adequate
understanding between the parties, thus allowing a social worker to provide better services to the
client. As a result, during the psychosocial assessment, I utilized various aspects to engage with
the client, thus creating a better communication environment. Among the strategies I employed
include questions regarding the client's history and other personal elements such as
entertainment. Using open-ended questions allowed the client to provide additional information
that helped to understand their needs effectively. While engaging the client, I also focused
mainly on their strengths as opposed to exploring their weaknesses, which enhanced their
confidence and built the conversation. Embracing a nonjudgmental attitude during the
assessment is another approach that I utilized to engage the client, which helped me understand
him, adhere to his needs, and provide quality social support.
Meaning
Involving the client in identifying the meaning of their situation is a vital social work approach.
During the assessment, I embraced various strategies, such as helping the client set goals, which
helped establish a framework for direction and purpose. Additionally, such an approach helped
the client understand that some of the challenges they were facing then were temporary and
could change in the future, thus guaranteeing them a better self-awareness. Consequently, I also
discussed different behaviours with the client, particularly during the diagnosis session, while
allowing them to feel comfortable and express themselves, which provided me with a clearer
understanding. Another methodology that I employed involved helping the client explore the
best coping mechanisms that could help them improve their situation. Such method works
effectively as the client feels in control of the conversation as opposed to the social worker
leading the proposal.
There are other approaches that I would do differently to make sure that the client's voice and
related life conditions were clearly captured such as embracing cultural sensitivity. Culture plays
a significant role during the assessment sessions, considering the uniqueness of every
community's beliefs and practices. Additionally, there are social challenges that are primarily
common among the black communities; thus, it is important to consider such when engaging a
client from a similar social background. Another aspect that I would do differently on the
assessment may involve analyzing and identifying any patterns within the client's history which
could help establish better coping mechanisms towards current challenges. other aspects, such as
active listening, could also enhance the biopsychosocial assessment process. Therefore,
considering such practices could help improve the results and create effective assessment
sessions for clients thus maintaining productive social work intervention.
