Pre-Exercise Screening continued
● New ACSM screening algorithm
○ Participants in 3 groups
■ 1. Currently exercising?
● Remember 3x3x30 (3 METS exerted 3 days a week for at least 30
minutes) in order to classify someone as physically active
■ 2. Have disease?
■ 3. Have signs or symptoms?
○ After grouped, results in 6 categories (based on whether they are currently
exercising)
● Algorithm Case Study Practice
○ Algorithm case study practice: #1
■✓Physically active (moderate activity three days a week for 40 minutes)
■✗Heart attack 5 years ago (once you have a ♥ attack, you are always
classified as having a cardiovascular disease)
■✓Visit to cardiologist 2 years ago — no changes
■ Medical clearance necessary? Yes
○ Algorithm case study practice: #2
■✗Inactive (sedentary lifestyle = < 3x3x30)
■✓When exerted, no signs or symptoms (person should not experience
signs or symptoms at rest OR when exerted)
■✓No major disease
■ Medical clearance? No
○ Algorithm case study practice: #3
■✓Physically active
■✗When exerted, is experiencing signs/symptoms (chest pain)
■✓No known diseases
■ Medical clearance? Yes
● CAD Risk Factors
○ The more risk factors you have, the more likely you are to develop CAD
