Muscular fitness
● 1 Rep Max (RM)
○ Increased by 2.5-20 kg until subject cannot complete repetitions
○ Final weight lifted successfully is recorded
○ Warm up should be used to correct errors in form, so it should be something they
can do easily
● Muscular endurance testing
○ 1 min timed curl-up test
○ Push-up to fatigue
○ # of repetitions of a given % of 1 RM load
■ Example
● 1-RM — 100 pounds; 75% of 1-RM — 75 pounds
○ # of repetitions is 12x
● After six months of resistance training, retested
● 1-RM — 180 pounds; 75% of 1-RM — 135 pounds
○ # of repetitions is 13x — while it improved a little bit in
terms of endurance, it would have been improved
significantly more if the weight did not increase
● Muscular power
○ Medicine ball “put”
○ Vertical jump
○ Standing long jump
● Evaluation
○ Standards exist for upper body muscle strength (bench press)
○ Lower body strength (leg press)
○ Standards are determined by other people in that age/sex./body build categories
■ Should not be considered too heavily, should mostly look if you are
improving from when you started, rather than comparing yourself to
others
■ Normative vs cumulative
