Climbing the Great Wall of China
Visiting and climbing the Great Wall of China was always my dream. It was an exciting
experience and a scary moment for me to think that someone could walk comfortably on the
structure of this ancient and important feature that is spanning across the rugged mountains of
northern part of china. I traveled to the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall, which is mainly
known for its beautiful scenery and well-maintained watchtowers. I didn't know that this
experience would become one of the most unforgettable as well as transformative event in my
life.
I arrived at the base of the great wall on a fine morning where there was a favorable
weather condition, the sky was vibrant blue in color and the air around the place was fresh and a
cool breeze coming from the other side of the wall. At the moment, I was nervous, and at the
same time, I was excited since I couldn't believe it was my dream come true to be on the Great
Wall. I stood at the base and looked up to stare at this beautiful and imposing structure
wondering and a lot of questions running into my mind. The great wall appeared to stretch high
into the sky with its interesting feature of a dragon-like shape winding through the mountain.
In an attempt to make my experience more interesting, I decided to climb to one of the
tallest points of the watchtower. Some of the footsteps made up of the old stones were worn and
smooth as a result of being used for many years making the path to have steep and uneven slope.
At the moment, I become more concerned and asking myself a lot of questions about the people
who constructed the structure many years ago. Some of questions that was running in my mind
was; how many people constructed this structure?, were they not afraid of the heights?, how was
the idea come about?, who designed the structure? But I couldn’t get the answers.
It wasn’t easy for me to climb the structure since it was my first experience to be in that
place. My legs burned, and I was breathing heavily as a result of the exercise of climbing the
structure. I wasn't sure if I would succeed in climbing the structure since I became more and
more exhausted as I continued to make some steps up, but I didn't give up since I imagined
myself standing on the Great Wall, which is surrounded by inspiring scenery .
After a long journey of attempting to climb the structure, I eventually arrived at the
watchtower. It was an overwhelming experience standing at the top of the structure, the wind
was so strong and cool which was whipping through my hair, I was staring at the large stretch of
the great wall snaking through the mountains. I had the best moments of my life on top of the
great wall not believing that I made it to the top of the watchtower.
I spent a lot of time viewing the beautiful landscape and sceneries from the top of
watchtower before starting my descent down the wall. The experience going down was easier as
compared to going up. As I was going down there were also other people who were strangers to
me who were going down but nobody could tell if there were strangers because we were
communicating and laughing together as we were descending to the bottom of the wall. I could
tell one of them to capture some images of me using my phone so that I could be remembering
an amazing experience I had that day.
At the moment I reached the bottom of the Great Wall, my legs were aching so much as
a result of exhaustion, but it didn't bother me as I had achieved my dream of climbing the Great
Wall of China. I was feeling very happy and tired at the same time as I first sat down at the base
of the wall for like 30 minutes before proceeding to where I had packed my car. I left the area
and went back home which until today it has remained to be unforgettable experience of my life.
Thinking about my writing
1. Which narrative techniques did you use to bring your narrative to
life? (2-3 sentences)$
I drew people into my tale by means of using descriptions and emotional facts. For
example, I even have pointed out the difficulties and tribulations I faced before reaching
to the watchtower of the Great Wall, which twists through the mountains and has layers
that resemble snakes.
2. How did your purpose and audience shape the way in which you wrote your
narrative? (3-4 sentences
I wanted an engaging experience that perfectly reflected the fun and opportunity for personal
growth that comes with traveling. My teacher and classmates were there. I decided to write about
my historically interesting and important trip to the Great Wall of China. I used the right tone
and included the right details to make the story engaging so that my audience could relate to my
experience.
3. Provide a concrete example from your narrative that shows how you have written
specifically for this audience and purpose. (3-5 sentences)$
I defined in my article how exciting it became to see the watchtower and how that experience
filled me with absolute joy. These unique aspects are incorporated into the story to inspire and
connect with my followers by sharing triumphs and personal moments that demonstrate how
overcoming obstacles can be fulfilling and transformative.
