In this quote James Baldwin is saying that education gives people freedom to
become a person with endless opportunities. It gives a choice of being someone
who you want to become, but it doesn’t always fit society. Society wants to
have people that will follow its rules, without questioning them. It is dangerous
to have a lot of people with their own opinions. It is easy to be like everybody
else. It takes courage and hard work to be different. Society needs regular
workers who would follow their rules without questioning them. I really like
this quote, and I think not everyone understands this idea of being not like
everyone else. Education aims to make free-thinking individuals, but society
needs stability. In my life I have studied in 3 different classes, in 2 different
counties and I often felt this tension between the real purpose of education and
the stuff that they teach in schools. But if everyone makes their own decisions
and have own opinions, there are going to be no compliant citizens, and without
them there would not be such a thing as society.
