Bilateral and multilateral trade and its impact on the economy
Bilateral trade is a type of trade in which two countries agree to carry out trade
between them. In bilateral trade, countries enter into trade agreements that
allow them to buy and sell goods and services directly with each other. This allows
these countries to strengthen their trade relations directly.
Meanwhile, multilateral trade involves several countries participating in trade
agreements. Multilateral agreements are generally outlined in global trade
agreements such as the World Trade Organization (WTO) and regional trade
agreements such as the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) and the European Union
(EU). In multilateral trade, trade occurs between many countries and allows
access to larger and wider markets.
The impact of bilateral and multilateral trade on the economy can vary. The
following are some of the impacts that may occur:
1. Impact on the national economy:
Bilateral trade can help countries develop strong trade relations with one another
and promote trade between countries. However, an unbalanced bilateral
agreement can hurt either party and exacerbate trade inequality. Multilateral
trade can provide greater market access and increase competition, but it can also
create more intense competition and depress prices.
2. Impact on unemployment:
Bilateral and multilateral trade can affect employment in certain countries. A
balanced trade agreement can increase employment, but an unbalanced
agreement can cause job losses and lower unemployment rates.
3. Impact on community welfare:
Bilateral and multilateral trade can affect people's welfare. Fair trade agreements
can increase people's welfare, but unequal agreements can increase social and
economic inequality.
4. Impact on the environment:
Bilateral and multilateral trade can also have an impact on the environment.
Trade can increase the consumption of natural resources and can generate higher
emissions, but it can also encourage technological innovation that is more
environmentally friendly.
In conclusion, bilateral and multilateral trade has a significant impact on the
economy and society. However, a balanced and fair trade agreement is very
important to ensure that the impact is positive for all parties and does not harm
any of the parties.
