Crime Analysis: A Real Life Scenario
Crime Analysis !
One of the most well-known cases where crime analysis played a crucial role in solving
the crime was the 2002 Washington, D.C. sniper attacks. The attacks were a series of
random shootings that occurred over a three-week period in October 2002, leaving ten
people dead and three others injured.!
Crime analysts from various law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and the
Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), were brought in to help
investigate the case. They worked around the clock, analyzing evidence, examining
crime scenes, and studying patterns in the attacks.!
Using a combination of geographic profiling and forensic analysis, the crime analysts
were able to identify patterns in the attacks and narrow down the search for the
suspects. They analyzed the locations and times of the shootings, as well as the bullets
and shell casings recovered from the crime scenes, to develop a profile of the
suspects.!
Their analysis showed that the suspects were likely to be male, had some military
experience, and were skilled marksmen. They also identified certain characteristics of
the vehicles used by the suspects, such as the type of car and the location of the
shooter within the car.!
Based on this analysis, law enforcement agencies were able to narrow down their
search for the suspects and eventually apprehend them. The two suspects, John Allen
Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo, were found to be living in a blue Chevrolet Caprice
that matched the description provided by the crime analysts. They were arrested at a
rest stop in Maryland on October 24, 2002, and charged with multiple counts of murder
and terrorism.!
The Washington, D.C. sniper case is a clear example of how crime analysis can be
used to solve complex and high-profile crimes. By analyzing evidence, studying
patterns, and developing profiles of the suspects, crime analysts were able to provide
crucial information that led to the apprehension of the perpetrators. Their work not only
helped to bring the perpetrators to justice but also helped to prevent future attacks and
improve public safety. It serves as a reminder of the important role that crime analysis

plays in modern law enforcement, and the critical importance of utilizing analytical
tools to support investigations and reduce crime.
