CHAPTER 4: HEAVY TIMBER FRAME CONSTRUCTION
1. Why does Heavy Timber construction receive relatively favorable treatment from
building codes and insurance companies?
It is more favorable because is it more fire resistant compared with other materials such as unprotected
steal. Building codes allow one to use heavy timber for projects with a greater height and area. Even
after a fire the charred outsides of the timber can be removed, and the insides could be salvaged.
2. What are the two basic requirements for Type IV Heavy Timber construction in the
International Building Code?
The two basic requirements are that the exterior walls are made of noncombustible materials while the
interior building elements are made from wood, making sure to not have concealed spaces.
