1. What is the difference between cement and concrete?
Ans:
Cement is a part of concrete. The cement is a powder substance and when it is
combined with water, it hardens into concrete.
3. List the precautions that should be taken to cure concrete properly. How do
these change in very hot, very windy, and very cold weather?
Ans:
Keep it moist until it reaches its required strength. Keeping the right amount of
substance when curing concrete involves spraying or flooding the top surface of
the concrete. For hot and windy weather, avoid drying out by erecting temp.
Windbreaks and shade, or add evaporation. Cold weather: cover and insulate to
prevent curing from stopping. If extreme cold: ingredients have to be heated
before mixing.
5. Explain how steel reinforcing bars work in concrete.
Ans:
They increase the tensile strength of concrete.
Put the bars where there are tensile forces in a structural member and let the
concrete resist the compression.
In column ties, it prevents buckling.
Used to resist cracking caused by curing shrinkage or thermal expansion and
contraction in slabs and walls.

9. Explain the differences between reinforcing and prestressing and the relative
advantages and disadvantages of each.
Ans:
Reinforcing is put where they expect the tensile forces to be in order to prevent
them from happening. Steel can stretch under tension and the concrete around it
cracks and loses efficiency.
Prestressing places the entire concrete slab in compression by stretching the
reinforcing bars before the beam is loaded. Subjective to creep and steel strands
stretch and lose some pre-stress force
