Chapter 3. Review Questions
Student Name: ____Christopher Barrientos_______________________
5. A sample 8-foot-long 2 × 4 weighs 10 pounds. After drying in an oven, it
weighs 8 pounds. What was its moisture content before drying? In its original
condition, was it adequately seasoned for use as a structural framing
member?
Ans:
After drying the lumber weight 8 pounds which is 2 pounds lighter than the
original 10 pounds. Meaning that the moister content was 25% before drying. In
its original condition it would not have been adequately seasoned as it must be
between 19% to 15% moisture content.
8. Give the actual cross-sectional dimensions of the following pieces of kiln-dried
lumber: 1 × 4, 2 × 4, 2 × 6, 2 × 8, 4 × 4, 4 × 12.
Ans:
1x4= 3/4''X3½
2x4= 1 ½ X 3 ½
2x6= 1 ½ X 5 ½
2x8= 1 ½ X 7 ¼
4x4= 3 ½ X 3 ½
4x12= 3 ½ X 11 ¼
11. Give three advantages of wood–plastic composites in comparison to
solid lumber. What are two common uses for wood–plastic composites?
Ans: It has no defects, you can get more dimensions not possible with solid
lumber and less lumber is wasted as more is used in other pieces, moister
resistance
