REHEARSING YOUR DELIVERY AND MANAGING YOUR ANXIETY
• Effective Verbal Delivery
Three Verbal Delivery Styles:
The extemporaneous style is most effective
oGreater credibility through knowledgeability and authenticity
oOther delivery styles can be somewhat effective when they mimic the
extemporaneous style
oRather than imitating extemporaneous delivery, just do it!
• Effective Nonverbal Delivery
Vocalics (paralanguage) – tone, volume, rate, pauses, and articulation
Kinesics (body language) – facial expressiveness, energetic gestures, and
movement
Oculesics (eye talk) – direct eye contact that communicates care, confidence, and
sincerity
Objectics (inanimate items) – appropriate appearance and adept use of visual aids

• Important Speech Delivery Considerations
Practice and employ the extemporaneous delivery style
Use podium and notes appropriately
Become especially familiar with opening and closing lines, wait for audience
attention, and begin with energetic enthusiasm
Adequate rehearsal yields confidence and competence
• The Nature of Public Speaking Anxiety
Anxiety is caused by two simultaneous factors:
oA desire to achieve an important goal, AND
oUncertainty associated with achieving that goal
To eliminate your anxiety, one of two conditions is required:
oYour goal must be eliminated, OR
oAll uncertainty associated with achieving the goal must be eliminated
Public speaking always involves seeking to achieve goals, and always involves an
amount of uncertainty in achieving them:
oTherefore, public speaking anxiety cannot be completely eliminated
A moderate amount of anxiety enhances performance:
oToo little anxiety results in apathy and poor performance
oToo much anxiety results in panic and poor performance
• Techniques for Managing (Reducing) Speaking Anxiety – Telling Yourself the Truth
Dam it – anxiety can be tamed:
oView “stage fright” as a potentially constructive energy source
oTransform nervous energy into enthusiastic expression
Chosen exposure overcomes fear – public speaking is voluntary:
oSpeeches are like parachuting
oView speeches as voluntary opportunities
Transfer confidence from an arena of competence – you are capable:
oPublic speaking is more like a conversation than a performance
oEmploy the “friendly face” technique
View yourself the way your audience sees you – you don’t look that nervous:
oYou look more nervous to yourself than to others
oOthers cannot see the extent of your anxiety (and if they notice a bit of anxiety,
they will empathize or envy rather than ridicule)
Remind yourself who the audience is – those people don’t meet your vital needs:
oWho meets your crucial needs for acceptance and esteem?
oYou are speaking to satisfy some of their practical needs, not for them to satisfy
some of your vital needs
