Internet Voting with Initiatives and Referendums
Internet voting can potentially revolutionize the democratic process by increasing
accessibility and participation. However, potential problems should be noticed, including
security issues and possible inequality in service access. The dispute over the 2000 election
encouraged the search for better ways of voting; this resulted in methods such as the Help
America Vote Act (HAVA) and a trial at Internet voting (Browder). While the proponents of the
form of voting indicate advantages such as convenience and increased participation, the
opponents point to negative consequences such as weakening the representative system and
augmenting the power of vested interests.
Personal View and Applicable Laws
In my view, Internet voting can improve the reality of the election as a more significant
number of voters classified as disabled people or people living far from the polling stations will
be able to vote on the Internet. However, these risks, such as security threats and the digital
divide, have to be mitigated in order not to negatively impact the functioning of democracy.
Another recent legislation I would like to see determined through online forums is the
local environmental policy to mitigate carbon emissions in my City. The legislation covers some
of society's most pressing concerns, such as air quality and climate change. Other sources, such
as forums, allow more people to contribute their opinions, making it easier to get various input.
With the help of online voting, citizens can vote and express themselves more than just turning
up for a town hall-style meeting. (Browder). This ensures that the policy reflects the
philanthropic disposition of the society and that the policy-making process is open to all.
Therefore, Internet voting has advantages, but it is necessary to focus on the key issues
that must be resolved. Hence, Guaranteeing secure and equal access to Internet voting can bring
more people into the decision-making process and make it more democratic.
