The article I chose concerns the use of analytics in the context of education. The article also focuses on
the development of education content analytics and contemplates the ethical and legal repercussions of
collecting and analyzing educational data. This has implications for the educational models known as
massive open online courses (MOOCs), such as Coursera and Pluralsight, but can also be utilized by
educational facilities as well.
The one thing that impressed me the most was that analytics can not only be used to improve curricula,
but the tools can also be used to help students. According to the article, “These tools promise to
improve the performance and engagement of both staff and students, and to provide measurable
insights into the educational process.”[ CITATION Mac14 \l 1033 ].
Businesses that are educational/training oriented can certainly use learning analytics to help design and
improve their course offerings. Educational facilities can do the same, improving content and covering
topics that are current. While the use of analytics in education is still new, the education space is still an
unexplored arena, and the data that is generated is under-utilized. The number of courses that are
offered online both in secondary education and training courses are increasing, so the amount of data is
becoming more plentiful.
