Recommendations for Implementing a Four-Day Workweek in the Warehouse Industry
Drawing from the findings on the applicability of a 4-day work week in the warehouse
industry, we provide the following recommendations on how to manage the change process
better:
1. Implement a phased rollout of the 4-day work week: As for the implementation of
the 4-day work week, we propose starting with a certain number of employees in the
warehouse; the trial will last for three months. This is beneficial in determining effects
on performance, morale, and other difficulties prior to large-scale adoption.
According to the Canadian Centre for the Study of Living Standards, pilot projects
assist in the definition of strategies and the identification of problems that were
unforeseen (Government of Canada, 2022).
2. Adjust shift schedules to maintain coverage: For the purpose of constant and
uninterrupted put and replenishment, we suggest implementing work shifts with four
four-day durations. For instance, one set of workers can be on duty from Monday
through Thursday, while the other group works from Tuesday through Friday. This
maintains five-day coverage while giving its employees three-day weekends.
Research shows that shift staggering can retain efficiency in the warehousing sector
during fewer working days (Wolfe, 2023).
3. Invest in process automation and efficiency improvements: To minimize the
impact of those adverse effects, we suggest the following solutions: • Implementing
automated inventory management systems and better picking/packing technologies. A
recent study identified that when facilities moved to shorter work weeks, 72% of these
could sustain production levels due to enhanced automation.
4. Provide training on time management and productivity. We recommend
mandatory employee training on effective time management, prioritization, and
3
productivity techniques for the compressed work week. Workshops should focus on
strategies to maintain output despite reduced hours. The Canadian Warehouse
Workers Union reports that targeted training was crucial for successful 4-day week
transitions in the logistics sector.
5. Establish clear productivity metrics and benchmarks: To ensure the 4-day week
does not negatively impact operations, we propose establishing and closely
monitoring key performance indicators like orders processed per hour, picking
accuracy rates, and on-time shipments. Regular reporting will allow for quick
adjustments if productivity declines.
By following through on these suggestions, we shall prepare our warehouse to transition to a
4-day working week, enhancing our employees' morale and reducing turnover without
necessarily affecting productivity. Performance outcomes of the program should be evaluated
after six months to check effectiveness and adjustments if needed.
