Zine Zoom Discussion Summary

1. Be creative! Your zine should be engaging and interesting to look at. I don’t want to scroll through a boring Word document with text at the top and an image pasted below. It doesn’t have to be sophisticated, but it should incorporate colour and images where appropriate.

2. Have a coherent theme that relates to what we covered in Section I (women and rock). What I don’t want to see is a regurgitation of the material; summarizing what we’ve discussed isn’t the point. Take a simple theme, such as challenges women in rock face, and weave it through your artist spotlight and remaining pages.

3. This is an individual assignment. You are not permitted to collaborate with other

students on this project.

4. Pay close attention to the rubric as you put your zine together and make sure it demonstrates a critical engagement with the course material. Your zine should be focused, creative, thoughtful and error free to receive an A+.

5. Artist Spotlight: I’ve added a handout with suggestions on eClass. It is by no means exhaustive, but any of those musicians would easily connect to the issues we’ve discussed. Your entire zine does not have to focus on this artist. They only need to relate to your theme. Feel free to incorporate other musicians on the other pages of your zine.

a. It does not matter if other students in the course choose the same musician

6. Each page of your zine should be constructed with printer size paper in mind (8.5x11).

7. Bibliography: Some research is involved to create your Artist Spotlight, but beyond that you shouldn’t have to do extensive research. Many of these pages should reflect your knowledge and opinions informed by the lecture material. I do not want to see pages littered with citations. If you use a quote or statistics then provide an in-text citation, otherwise the bibliography will suffice.

a. You may draw on the required readings where relevant. b. Academic sources will be peer-reviewed. Email me with a source if you’re unsure

whether it’s scholarly. c. Lecture material does not need to be cited. The TAs and I know you’re drawing

on this material.

8. You may use first person in the zine, but I would refrain from writing the entire zine this way. Be judicious where you employ the first person.

9. You can use any program you’re comfortable with to create your zine as long as the pages correspond to the required size and the zine can be uploaded as a PDF.
