Quantitative Research

Part 1: SURVEY

Research question and variables

Research Question: Do participation in college preparation programs determinate the success of first generation students in college?

Independent variable: Participation in college preparation programs

Dependent variable: College success

Control variables: gender, race, geographic location

Population, sampling frame, sample

Population: First generation college students

Sampling frame: Freshmen who joined college in 2018

Sample: 500 first generation college students

Questionnaire

What is your gender?

What is your racial background?

How old are you?

How many brothers and sisters do you have?

Have any of your brothers or sisters attended college?

What is the highest level of education for your parents?

Does anybody in your family now about college preparation programs?

Has anybody in your family participated in a college preparation program?

Did you participate in a college preparation program prior to getting into college?

Do you know anybody who became successful in college because of participation in a college preparation program?

PART 2

Methods

Participants

The participants of this survey study were 300 first generation college students at UCI who entered UCI in 2010. These students were recruited to the study during freshman orientation, and tracked annually for 6 years. The data of the data was collected using the UCI Longitudinal Study of First Generation Students of 2016 and the surveys took place over the telephone. The demographics of the study include both male and female students; white, Black, Latino, Asian Pacific Islander, American Indian, and students from other racial backgrounds; and students from low, moderate, and high socio-economic status.

Procedures Comment by Alexandra Olsen: Need to talk about how the data was collected here and talk about the fact we made crosstabs

Chi Square Test will be performed on the collected data and the degree of significance will 0.05. This will be performed on data from the UCI Longitudinal Study of First Generation Students survey.

Measures Comment by Alexandra Olsen: Need to also talk about control variables here

The first variable in the study is ATTAIN. This variable measures on whether a student has attained a bachelor degree or not. Those who have attained are categorized as BA, which mean that they have a bachelor’s degree; and those who have not attained are categorized as NOBA, which means that they do not have bachelor’s degree. Under this variable, the student was asked if he/she had completed a bachelor’s degree and the expected answer was either yes or no. This is an independent variable. The second variable is COLLPROG. This variable measures on whether has participated in college program or not. Those who have participated are categorized as PROGYES, while those who have not are categorized as PROGNO. The survey question for this variable asks on whether a student has participated in a college support program and the answer is either yes or no. This is also an independent variable. The third variable is STUDIED. This variable focuses on the number of hour that a student spends per week. 0-3 categorized students that report having studies 0-3 hours per week on average; 4-6= reports studying 4-6 hours per week on average; 7+ = reports studying 7 hours per day on average. The survey question used here would be to ask student on the number of hours that they spend per week on average and the answer options would be 1) 0-3 hours; 2) 4-6 hours; 3) 7+ hours.

RESULTS

Descriptive Statistics Comment by Alexandra Olsen: These are not descriptive stats these are tables for the hypotheses sections. You were supposed to make the labels and percentage down/compare across

Hypothesis 1 – Micro-Level Factors

H1: First generation college student who are studious are more likely to attain bachelor degree than first generation college student who are not. Comment by Alexandra Olsen: These are not the chi square test hypotheses

H0: First generation college students who are studious are not more likely to attain bachelor degree than first generation college students who are not.

The result of the study shows those college students who study more than seven hours per week on average are more likely to attain a bachelor degree (46) compared to student who study 0-3 hours per week on average (33).

Since p value (0.362373) is less than α, the null hypothesis is rejected and the hypothesis of the study is not rejected. Comment by Alexandra Olsen: We fail to reject the nul hypothesis here.

Macro -Level Factors Comment by Alexandra Olsen: Same comments here as on hypothesis 2. You did not do the hypotheses correctly. You also need to compare across.

H2: First generation college student who participate in a college support program are more likely to attain bachelor degree that fist generation college students who do not.

H0: First generation college student who participate in a college support program are not more likely to attain their bachelor degree than first generation college students who do not.

According to the results of the study, students that participated in a college support program and attained a bachelor degree were 75. On the other hand, students that did not participate in a college support program and attained a bachelor degree were 45.

P value (0.0001) is less than α (0.5) and thus the null hypothesis is rejected. This implies that the hypothesis of the study is not rejected.

Summary

From the results of the study, macro factors and micro factors impact firs generation college students, but macro factors greatly affect them.
