Character selection and rationale/
In 1920s, when his evangelism mission became promptious, prostentanism in the country was divided due to the controversies between controversies between fundamentalism and modernism. The scopes trial had in1916 destroyed the fundamentalists public image.
The Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution brought a lot of contradictions which led to people thinking graham was just unlearned. This became a challenge for him to spread the gospel never the less he did not give up. With the assistance of the new media technologies, he stopped working for the fundamentalist and continued spreading the gospel through radio and television.
In the 1940s, he was challenged by Charles templeton to hold a youth rally. This brought him a lot of attention and popularity amongst the youth. Despite facing critics from the conservatives, he distanced himself from them and concentrated in his mission to spread the gospel. His evangelistic association in corporation with political leaders created a wide range of awareness especially amongst the youth. In collaboration with local churches, they provided a follow up programmes for the new converts.
In 1996, graham and his wife received the congressional gold Medal of Honor. This was the highest bestowed civilian award by the United States. In 2001, he became the honorary knight commander of the order of the British Empire. In 2005, he concluded his public career with a massive crusade Queens, New York.
He claims he has spoken to more people than anyone else, in person in history. His social and political associations regarding to his UN official role of Americas spokesman for evangelists made him one of the most recognized religious figures of the 20th century.
In his achievements, he was honored with the American academy of achievements gold plate award together with the horatio Alger award. Graham came to receive the first protestant to receive an honorary degree in a Roman Catholic school. In relations to media and communications, he was awarded the first American Jewish committee national inter-religious award. From the national conference of Christians, he was awarded international brotherhood awards in 1971.
In 1983, graham had been awarded with the presidential Medal of Freedom which was then the highest civilian award and received a star in Hollywood walk of fame. Graham was also awarded, the Ronald Reagan presidential foundation freedom awards. This was as a result of the monumental and lasting contributions to the cause of freedom in 2000. In 2001, he was awarded with the honorary knight commander of the order of the British Empire (KBE) for hid contribution to civic and religious life for over six decades.
His major contributions to the country were the founding father Billy Graham’s Evangelistic Association (BGEA) as the ministry he used for spreading the gospel to the world. The association had a radio programme, television broadcasts and magazines where he had tried the best he could to use the modern method to preach the gospel to as many people as he could.
Graham has also served as an active presidential advisor for many years and different kinds of presidents. His ideas have been appreciated from the likes of Harry S. Turman to the likes of barrack Obama. His views and political affairs have been appreciated worldwide and have also influenced quite a number of people and different kinds of communities all over the world.
Graham has also contributed significantly in the fight for human rights. This brought him close to RV martin Luther king jr. also during the 1964 aftermath of the bombing of the sixteenth street Baptist church, he created awarenee though holding integrated crusades in Birmingham, and Alabama.
After the World War II, the cultural climate of America was not really in a good shape. It was being threatened by communism. Graham took a big step in preaching against and this made evangelism a non-threatening and an easy way to get over the fears and agony brought along by war. People eventually turned to spirituality to seek comfort. This initiated him into being the leader of ray and hope.
In addition to crusades, despite the extreme guerilla threats, Billy joined Grady Wilson and bob pierce; the co founder of world vision, during the Korean War for a two weeks mission with supervision form the military sources in order to preach to the Korean people. Some other achievements of Billy graham in the American history, he has the record for the past decades of the ten most admirable men for Gallup poll since 1948 placing him the head of the overall list of the most admired by the Americans.
In 1969, Billy was recognized by the anti- defamation league of the B’nai B’rith and the national conference of Christians and Jews for his efforts in trying to make them understand the importance of being there for one another.
Since childhood, Billy devoted his entire life to the service of Christianity. He started by spreading the word to the nearest communities, and despite the fact that he did his studies, this did not in any way change his passion for the Gospel. He is and will remain a religious icon through his tireless dedication to always working for the betterment of humanity.
