1) Creating an actual survey that is effective for gathering the correct data can take a long time. What are some of the key things that need to be considered as you create one?
2) The data she used to base her conclusion is inconclusive, because what the student analyzed is working mothers outside of the home. The survey did not include working mothers inside of the home. The percentage although high (83%), is the results of a survey based on mothers working outside of the home. In order for the statistical evidence to be true, the same survey would have to be given to the working mothers inside the home.
3) Something that is very important when conducting a study such as this, is in the individuals that have been selected to take the survey. The statistics say that 83% of MOTHERS employeed outside the home would rather be home raising their children. This says to me that only working mothers were surveyd. Therfore, to say that this particular statistical analyses proves that most women would rather be at home would be taking the results of the study out of context. In order to state that most women would rather be home would mean that the individuals being surveyed need to not only be mothers but also women who are not mothers. Then if the outcome were 83% of women employeed outside the home, then the statement about most women wanting to be home would be more acurate. There may also be other factors that need to be considered for her survey. One that comes to mind for me is do any of these mothers work in a location where they may have their child with them. For instance a mother who works in a daycare center that her child attends may be more inclined to say that it does not matter if they are at home or work outside their home because they are with their child. While a mother who works at a daycare center but whos child does not attend that same daycare would be more inclined to say that they would rather be at home. Everything is relative to each individuals situation. According to our textbook Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences "Mark Twain: There are lies, damned lies, and statistics. His statement identified that statistics can be deceiving—and so can interpreting them." (Privitera, n.d.) It is very easy for someone to look at the statistics from an experiment or survey and interpret them different then what they truly are.
4) What career are you pursuing/doing? How is statistics important in your field? Make sure to be as specific as possible.
5) I think statistics is important because psychologist have to know how many people have certain behaviors, or how many times a person does this or that. Statistics are a way to gather information so it can be interpreted into needed data to decide certain factors that they are researching."Statistics is commonly applied to evaluate scientific observations. Scientific observations are all around you. Statistics is a branch of mathematics used to summarize, analyze, and interpret what we observe—to make sense or meaning of our observations." (Privitera, G., 2018).
