BIO201A Human Anatomy

Written/Oral Assignment

I. Purpose

The purpose of this assignment is to give you an opportunity to gather more information and to become an expert of a disease of your choice. This assignment will also focus on improving your oral and written communication skills

II. Grading

This assignment is worth 350points: 200 from the written assignment and 150 from the oral presentation.

You will have a grading rubric for both the written and oral presentation. Your classmates and I will grade your oral presentation. I will be the only person grading the written assignment.

III. Topics

We will be discussing the 5 systems of the body. You may choose a disease that coincides with one of the systems that we will discuss (integumentary, muscular, skeletal , nervous & senses).

IV. Dates

Below are the due dates for various aspects of this assignment. Once you submit your choice of disease you are committed to that disease. There will be no changing of topics or presentation dates during the semester. No more than 2 people can present on the same date. Presentations will be made during the laboratory period.

Due date of disease selection: Wednesday, July 23rd

Due date of written assignment: On the day you schedule your presentation

Dates of Oral Presentations: During lab: See sign-up sheet.

V. Written Assignment

Each student will create a pamphlet to share with others (instructor and classmates) about the disease you have selected. The pamphlet should address the following:

1. Name of Disease

2. Symptoms (How do you know if you have the disease? What are some signs?)

3. Physiology (How does this disease affect the body?)

4. Diagnosis (How is it determined that the pesssrson has the disease?)

5. Prevalence (Who gets the disease? Is this disease more prevalent in one gender or ethnicity than another? Include statistics.)

6. Treatment (How do you treat this disease? Can you die from this disease? Can you be cured?)

7. Prevention (What precautions can you take to prevent someone from getting the disease?)

8. References (What source did you use to gather the information in the pamphlet? Do not use the internet as your primary source.)

Your pamphlet will be graded on the following:

1. Content (Information on disease to include definition, physiology, symptoms, diagnosis, prevalence, treatment, prevention, and references.)

2. Mechanics (Organization, spelling, grammar, punctuation)

3. Format/layout (Pamphlet should be 1 page, front and back. It can be folded in half or tri-folded)

4. References (At least 3 references; no more than 1 web site reference)

VI. Oral Presentation

Oral presentations will be done during the first 10 – 20 minutes of the laboratory class. Your presentation should be between 7 – 8 minutes in length. Going over or under the time will affect your grade. Make sure that you have a pamphlet for everyone in your laboratory class. Your presentation will be graded on the following:

1. Subject Knowledge

2. Clarity

3. Creativity (Was the pamphlet organized? Were you interested in the pamphlet based on how it looked?)

4. Engagement

5. Elocution

6. Professionalism

7. Visual Aids

VII. Plagiarism

Do not copy exact text from sources. Paraphrase the information. Use your own words. If you plagiarize any part of your assignment you will receive a grade of 0.
