Writing Project 3 Assignment Sheet: Research-Supported Argumentative Essay

Task: Write a research-supported argumentative essay. You should take a position on the topic covered in your Annotated Bibliography. You will need to identify and develop an argument that you want to make about the issue you chose, and enter into the ongoing conversation about the topic by introducing source material that explains and illuminates as well as source material that helps you support your point.

On Argument: Rather than write a report (an informative document that shares everything you learned in your research), your aim should be to share your perspective or “informed opinion” and/or observations—what YOU have to say.

Of course, you will use source material to inform your reader, provide background, and show that the issue exists. So, there is an informative or “report” element, but the focus is on YOUR commentary. This should be expressed in your thesis statement presented early in the paper.

Details:

· Your project in final form should be 7-10 pages in length written in APA format. This includes a title page, abstract and References page.

· In its final form, the paper should be typed and double-spaced in a readable 12-point font.

· Your paper should have a strong thesis statement that expresses the main point(s) that you make.

· Your paper will need a scholarly title.

· You will need to use a minimum of ten sources for your project. You will likely use more, because as you write, you will find that you will add to the material you have already gathered for the Annotated Bibliography.

(NOTE: You do not have to add to your finished Annotated Bibliography. You also do not have to use all the sources in your Annotated Bibliography)

Writing Project 4: Sharing Our Work with the UT Community (Experiential Learning/ Scholarly Presentation)

Tasks: Prepare a “poster” presentation for the UT Spring Showcase of Student Writing. Present your work during a 1.5-hour slot on Thursday, April 19, 2018 in Carlson Library.

Our purpose is to INFORM the audience about our findings in a public forum. We can also PERSUADE them of our role as scholars, and about the issue we present.

Step 1: Choose your Genre(s) to deliver your information and the Medium to deliver them through.

“Poster” options: Posters combine visual and text in a variety of formats. You can choose from a flat poster, tri-fold poster, a simple website, Create a Sway presentation, infographics, video, audio.

Many presenters deliver material through multiple options: A trifold backdrop PLUS a laptop with moving presentation, PLUS documents or props on the table.

Step 2: Learn the software and about the best practices of the genre you choose:

I will do some presenting on these in class, and work with you individually.

Step 4: Make sure you share research sources with your audience in some way.

· Webpage: as a references page or as footnotes at the base of your writing.

· Sway: Page of citations or footnotes.

· Tri-fold: Usually a block/zone in the lower right corner listing cited documents.

Assessment/Evaluation:

· You earn attendance and participation credit for your role in the Showcase.

· You will be assessed on the rhetorical effectiveness of the choices you make to transfer your material from one genre (genre analysis paper or research paper draft) to another genre.

· Presenters are eligible for awards. Judges will circulate all day. Awards are given for each hour. Presenters may enter their work in the 2019 Spring Shapiro Writing Competition Multimedia category and be eligible for cash prizes.

· You will be required to include text-based contributions and an image of your presentation in your final portfolio. You may also provide links to digital work. You will also be asked to reflect on your work and the presentation experience in your final essay in the course.
