Writing a Literature Review: Structure & Writing

Most literature reviews are designed to bring together the information from a lot of different sources, and to give the reader an overview of a particular subject. These articles also tend to have a thesis, that builds on the body of work, and adds something to the overall knowledge in the field. In this class we will be writing several review papers, but these will generally be about a small number of references, and I do not expect you to add to the field. However, it is useful to have some sort of Thesis, or topic that is the main thing you want to get across. This will help to focus your writing.

Your whole article should revolve around your thesis or topic: In this case, the figure you were assigned and what it tells us about the process in the overall paper.

The whole thing should be a series of paragraphs, but it can be helpful to think of these in a few ways.

Introduction. This section should introduce the topic and your thesis, and should discuss why this topic is significant. It should clearly define exactly what this article will discuss, outline the order in which you will discuss it, and give the reader any background information needed to understand the coming sections. So in this case, tell us a little about the overall question of the paper, and then the specific question that your figure is trying to address. – in this case you can think of this as the B,Q section.

3. Body: This is where you tell your reader the main points about your topic…so in this case, this would be the likely place for materials and observations. What are they doing in the figure, and what do they see. You do want to continue to relate this back to your question.

4. Discussion and Conclusions: You should conclude your review by restating your thesis and the purpose of the article, then discuss the conclusions you have drawn. You should also discuss the implications of your figure and how it fits into the bigger picture of the whole article.

5. References: You do not need ot include “in text” citations for this assignment, but we will start to use them in future assignments. At the end, be sure to list all of the references that you used. It does not matter exactly which format you use, but you should use one of the standard formats.
