Student Loan Debt Forgiveness
The issue that I have chosen to write about in this paper is the recent move by the Biden administration to cancel or forgive the student loan debt for Americans earning less than $125,000 per year (Lobosco, 2022). The loan debt cancellation is aimed to offer relief for many working Americans who have struggled to pay these loan debts while they try to improve their lives, feed families, or start families. However, the issue has been met with mixed reactions from the American public with some supporting and others opposing the move. The coverage of the issue by the mainstream media has shown division and bias over how the issue is covered by different national news organizations.
Research from three news agencies including CNN, Fox News, and The Forbes Magazines has portrayed a picture of how divided is the media about the issue. For instance, CNN which is considered one of the leading liberal media houses in America is covering the issue in a way that leans towards the support of the Biden Administration's move (Lobosco, 2022). CNN coverage seeks to inform and educate its viewers and the public about who will benefit from the program. On the other hand, Fox News which is considered a conservative media house is opposing the move by the Biden administration terming it costly and a way to woo voters to support the democrats in the upcoming election later this year (Fox News Staff, 2022). Lastly, Forbes Magazine which mostly is apolitical and deals with economic or monetary news is covering the economic talking points of the program and how it will affect the country’s economy (Friedman, 2022). Thus, the same issue is covered by three media organizations with all addressing and taking a different standpoint.
