Writing Assignment for 2301 Business Law

It is important for you to know and understand the events that are happening locally, nationally and globally. This assignment consists of finding a “current” legal topic of interest to you. You may look in newspapers, magazines, or other online resources. You may choose current litigation, mergers/acquisitions, new technologies or other legal topics. Please identify a current legal topic that is of interest to you. Each of the requirements listed below should be submitted together in one e-Learning submission.

First step : write a paragraph (with a minimum of 250 words or there will be an automatic 3 point deduction) describing the legal topic that you have chosen using good sentence structure with proper spelling, grammar and punctuation (points will be deducted). Please include a basic description of the facts and a succinct description of the legal issue you plan to write about. Write the paragraph in your own words. Do not quote the article. If you must paraphrase, please cite it properly. Also, you MUST provide a weblink citation to the article or news report that you used to choose your legal topic or there will be an automatic 3 point deduction. Please list the citation at the end of the first paragraph.

Second step : provide a description of what source of law your topic centers upon. If there are multiple sources of law, please provide all of them. For example, if it is statutory law, please give me the name of the law or the citation.

Third step: write one paragraph (with a minimum of 150 words or there will be an automatic 3 point deduction) which describes your opinion of the legal topic or the direction you believe the legal topic will go. I want you to explore your attitudes/thoughts on the legal topic. I do not want the positives and negatives of a particular issue. I want to know what you think about the particular legal issue you have chosen to explore/follow and how you might persuade me to your way of thinking about the subject. If you do not give me your opinion, there will be an automatic 5 point deduction.

Grades will be based on the following scoring:

First Step – 15 points; Second Step – 5 points; Third Step – 10 points

Deductions – There will be deductions for citations and word count as specified above. No late assignments will be accepted. If you do not submit the assignment through e-Learning by the due date, you will receive a grade of zero. There will be deductions if there are significant errors in grammar, spelling and punctuation. Please have someone review or edit your writing assignment.
