Writing assignment 5

Writing Assignment #1 – You are creating a Project/Performance Assessment this week.  This assignment is based on your standard. It is a project-based assessment that allows your students to prove their understanding in a new way. Do not copy an activity. This is your chance to get creative.

You will submit one document with four (4) pieces which are outlined in the assignment instructions and described in further detail below.

Performance Assessment- Students demonstrate their abilities in a multitude of ways. Some will demonstrate mastery of written assessments while others will shine during projects, presentations, or artistic expression. How can students prove their mastery of your chosen standard in an alternative form? Create a performance assessment for your students. This will consist of four (4) parts:

·

· teacher GRASPS document

· teacher planning documents,

· interesting student copy (should grab students’ attention and make them excited to complete the assignment), and include ALL information students need to complete the assignment

· a rubric (used for scoring and explaining various levels of completion).

As you begin to plan, remember that not all students are the same. Work to incorporate choice into the assignment. This will also help the student create ownership of the assignment. In Appendix B, see examples of the “Teacher Planning: Performance Task Template”, “GRASPS”, student instructions “Extra NEWS Paper”, and “Rubric Template Example”

Writing assignment 2

Write a letter to parents explaining the performance assessment and how the rubric will be used to grade their child’s submission. Items to include in your letter: a brief explanation of the task and the purpose behind the task; a summary of the rubric categories, how each category is scored, how the rubric score is converted to a student grade.  Be sure to make your letter open to two-way communications where parents can contact you with questions and concerns.
