SOC 236 – Writing Assignment #5

1. Read the text “The Generational Equity Debate” on pages 353-356 (Reading 37 in the 9th edition). The authors of this reading contrast two ways of framing the debate regarding public policy toward older adults—the “generational equity frame” and the “generational interdependence frame.” What are the key assertions of these two frames? What side do you come down on and why? Explain.

2. Consider the following difficult task. Imagine that you are in charge of a Meals on Wheels program providing home-delivered meals to older adults in your community. Your agency has just received a 50% budget cut for next year, and now you must recommend which of the current meal recipients should continue to receive food. Write a detailed memorandum explaining how you would decide who are the least advantaged older adults deserving of continued service.

The total length of the responses (the answers to both questions) should be at least 2 full pages (that is about 23 lines with double line spacing x 2 on US letter size, not including the question) and cannot be longer than 3 full pages.

· Use Times Roman, 12 (or similar);

· Double line spacing;

· Standard margins (1 inch on top and bottom, 1.25 inches on left and right side);

Write clearly and pay close attention to spelling, grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, the structure of your answers (paragraphs), and accuracy in general. If you suspect your writing skills can be improved by a visit to the Writing Center, do not hesitate to make an appointment or to drop by the Center’s office, AC-1C18.

The thought behind the assignments is your ability to show an understanding of the course material IN YOUR OWN WORDS. For these assignments, make sure that at least 90% of your answers consist of your words and your analysis. Thus, NO excessive quoting and NO excessive paraphrasing. When you think a short citation from a text could strengthen your analysis, it is important to be accurate with the citation. In order to prevent plagiarism, whenever you use a theory, an idea, or data in general (including from graphs and tables) that are not yours, you need to give the correct source of your writings.

Please submit your assignments by uploading them as one file onto Turnitin (on Blackboard).
