Assignment
What are the essential problems of capitalism according to Marx? Discuss private ownership of the means of production and how this leads to the exploitation of workers. Use Marx’s terminology. Explain class conflict and the relationship between the bourgeoisie and the proletariat. Include discussion of necessary and surplus labor, and surplus value. Explain the effect of machinery on labor and the basics of capitalist accumulation. What is the relationship between capitalism (the economy) and other social institutions? There is no need to be overly technical or detailed. The paper should demonstrate an understanding of Marx that results from a first introduction to his thought.
Reminders from the syllabus
There will be four writing assignments based on lectures and readings. I will distribute the assignments at least one week before they are due for submission. Each assignment will count as 15% of the final grade. Papers should be about 3 to 4 pages in length.
Late papers policy
Papers are due at the beginning of class on the indicated dates. Late papers will be penalized five (5) points for each day late. Papers will not be accepted more than one week late. The only exceptions will be due to documented medical reasons and family emergencies.
