Live Classical/Jazz Concert Report (Essay) Title: Live Classical/Jazz Concert Report (Essay) Overview: Live performances are invaluable to the understanding and appreciation of music. They provide students with an opportunity to see amateur/professional musicians at work in live performance settings, as well as provide context for class discussions. Each student is required to attend a live concert (either "classical" or "jazz" performances only) and write a concert report (essay of at least 500 words) that assesses carefully the musical elements of the performance. Details: The purpose of this assignment is to:

 identify and describe the elements of music.

 demonstrate listening skills through identification of musical elements within the music.

 identify basic musical vocabulary.

 experience live “classical” or “jazz” performances. Requirements: The student must submit a photocopy of the program cover (when available) and a concert report (essay of at least 500 words) that assesses carefully the musical elements of the performance. The essay must be double spaced and use Times New Roman, 12 Point Font. NOTE: Essays will not be returned.

A sample report (essay) and sample outline (for note taking at the concert) will be provided in the weeks to come.

A rubric will be used to assess the essay (See Attachment) Check the calendar for due dates. Resources: Students are required to submit this writing assignment to Tutor.com. In addition, each student will be required to turn in the Tutor’s comments with the final draft of the assignment as proof that he/she made use of the service. The final version must also be submitted using Blackboard’s SafeAssign tool. References: Students who have attended a live concert in the past have opted for performances held at nearby schools (e.g., William Paterson University, Montclair State University, etc.) You would have to visit the school website for available times and dates. In addition, you may want to look in your local paper for events held in your area. If a jazz performance is of any interest to you, you may also want to visit the TRUMPETS JAZZ CLUB & RESTAURANT website (www.trumpetsjazz.com). They offer shows on most days except Sundays and, I believe, Mondays. Again, visit their website for available times and dates. Keep in mind, almost all of these events have a fee of some sort.
