WRITING ASSIGNMENT REQUIREMENTS
Assignments should:
· use an academic writing style.
· reflect critical thinking.
· include concrete examples/details and avoid generalities.
· include a separate cover page.

· The language should be impersonal, and should not include personal pronouns, emotional language or informal speech.
· Avoid political aspersions.
· be in essay format.

. Hint: The introduction states your thesis or the purpose of the paper. Organize your body paragraphs to include a main idea, which is then developed or illustrated by support evidence. The conclusion is a restatement of your thesis.

· Use the following naming convention when saving your assignment:

. The source(s) and information used must be locatable in the MDC library, the Internet or the assigned textbook. Sources that are not locatable or verifiable will be ignored and may be considered plagiarized.
4. Sources retrieved from the Internet should be used sparingly.
· For all course work submitted or posted, students must cite all sources of information whereas I can retrieve a copy of the source to verify it. If a book is used, the student must include the page number of where the information was taken.
· Students should not use sources that are more than 10 years old (unless establishing a timeline or for historical context).
· Students should use scholarly sources via the MDC online library.
· If a book is used, the page in which the information was retrieved from must be included. The professor may require the student to send a photo of the book via emai.
· If the professor is not able to retrieve the information, it will not be considered as a source and or the information will be assumed to be plagiarized.
· Note: If you are having trouble uploading your assignment via Blackboard, you must notify me via email and attach a copy of the assignment before the due date.
Assignments not submitted this way will not be opened or graded.
LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED; however, you may turn in your assignment early.
WRITING PROMPT:
What is the biggest problem facing police in the USA today? (Please note: You are writing this from the perspective of the police department. Choose a problem in which you can locate substantial information.)
Prepare an essay covering, in detail, the following:
1. Detailed description of the problem.
2. Why is this the #1 problem? (More important than any other at the this time.)
3. Related issues.
4. Explain how this does or could affect a police agency (directly/indirectly).
5. Who's responsible? (The major players.)
6. What is the history of this problem?
. Is it something new or has it been a problem for a long period of time?)
. What's been done in the past, if anything?
. Why did those efforts work or not work?
7. What is the long-term strategy for addressing the issue?
8. Final recommendations.
9. Why should we care? (Police chiefs, citizens, government officials, etc.)
10. Whatever information you believe would be of interest.
Requirements:

. Your paper must be at least 4-5 pages (only). (Do not include the title page or reference page in your page count.) (Points will be deducted for not meeting [four full pages] or exceeding the page limit.)
. Your essay should be thorough, yet concise, and in your own words.
. Proofread your paper before submitting.
. You must use your textbook and at least three (3) other scholarly articles to support your position/findings.
. Use the MDC Library and the textbook to locate research to support your paper.
Papers that are not submitted as described above will not be graded and will result in a zero (0).
