Writing an Effective

Thesis Statement

WHAT ARE SOME TIPS?

1. If you are given a broad topic or no prompt at all, it is helpful to come up with a thesis question.

2. Make your thesis concise (clearly and in a few words) and debatable.

3. Once you have completed a draft, revise your paper and thesis so that it matches the paper.

WHAT ARE THE PARTS

OF A SUCCESFUL THESIS?

The thesis is made up of your claim and methodology:

CLAIM: WHAT are you arguing?

METHODOLOGY: HOW will you prove it?

HOW LONG SHOULD IT BE? WHERE SHOULD IT GO?

Generally, it is one or two sentences found at or near the end of your introductory paragraph.

WHAT IS A THESIS STATEMENT?

The thesis is the main argument of the paper. It is the central focus or main idea of the essay.

EXAMPLE THESIS

CLAIM: WHAT the author is arguing.

Although not terrible films, the Star Wars prequels undermine the original franchise by portraying the figure of Darth Vader as an annoying, arrogant brat instead of a great man who experienced a tragic fall into darkness.

Methodology: HOW I will prove the claim.

What am I arguing? That the prequels undermine or damage the original Star Wars films (THE CLAIM)

How will I prove this claim? By looking at how Darth Vader is portrayed
