Creator: Claude Monet, French, 1840 ‐ 1926 Title: The Artist's Garden at Giverny Work Type: Paintings Period: 19th century Date: 1900 Material: Oil on canvas Measurements: 89.5 x 92.1 cm (35 1/4 x 36 1/4 in.) Description: In 1890, Monet bought a house in Giverny, a small town along the Seine about forty miles northwest of Paris. He immediately began work to design the surrounding garden, which eventually became a famous work of art in its own right, reproduced in numerous horticultural magazines in the early‐twentieth century. The garden at Giverny functioned as "the retreat of an artist," Monet told a writer in 1904. In particular, his work at Giverny built on the investigation of form undertaken in the "series paintings" of the 1890s, which include his views of haystacks and the Rouen cathedral. In this painting, a high horizon line tilts the view toward the picture plane. Dynamic brushwork and vibrant color seem less to depict an actual scene than to create a pure visual impression. In this way, the painting hinges between nineteenth‐century Impressionism and twentieth‐century abstration. Creator: Jonas Lie (Norway, 1880 ‐ 1940, New York City, New York) Title: Dusk on Lower Broadway Work Type: painting Date: ca. 1910 Material: oil on canvas Measurements: 37 1/2 in. x 31 1/2 in. (95.25 cm x 80.01 cm) Description: Inscription: signed, lower right, in red paint: Jonas Lie Description: Jonas Lie (pronounced 'lee') was born in Moss, Norway to a Norwegian father and Connecticut‐born mother. His father died when Jonas was eleven and the family relocated to Plainfield, New Jersey. As the eldest son, it was his responsibility to support the family, which he did for nine years designing calico shirts in a cotton factory.
Lie loved to travel and had probably been to Paris twice before he painted Dusk on Lower Broadway. In Paris, the artist encountered the works of the Impressionist Claude Monet, the Fauvist Henri Matisse, and the Post‐Impressionist Paul Gauguin; the styles of each of these painters would inform Lie's later work. Certainly in this picture one sees the quick, short brushwork and atmospheric rendering associated with Impressionism. The capturing of minute detail is not the aim of the painter here; rather, Lie has sought to capture the quality of light and the "feeling" of a winter's afternoon as busy New Yorkers hurry along lower Broadway.
Jonas Lie was quite successful in New York. He is best remembered today for a series of paintings detailing the work on the Panama Canal (now held at the United States Military Academy at West Point). He was sufficiently respected by his fellow artists to help organize the now famous New York Armory Show of 1913 during which America was introduced to the avant‐garde art of Europe. Lie, however, resigned from the show's planning committee in protest over the preference given to European over American artists. His work continued to be traditional when compared to the artistic experiments, such as Cubism, being undertaken in Europe and America.

Creator: Iranian Culture: Asian; Middle Eastern; Persian Title: Fluted bowl Work Type: Decorative Arts and Utilitarian Objects Work Type: Vessels Date: 522‐405 B.C. Material: Gold Measurements: H. 4.4 in. (11.1 cm) Description:
In the sixth century B.C., under the leadership of Cyrus the Great (r. 538‐530 B.C.), the Achaemenid Persian dynasty overthrew Median kings and established an empire that would eventually extend from eastern Europe and Egypt to India. Achaemenid rulers include such famed kings as Cyrus, Darius I (r. 521‐486 B.C.), and Xerxes I (r. 485‐ 465 B.C.). They built palaces and ceremonial centers at Pasargadae, Persepolis, Susa, and Babylon. The Achaemenid Dynasty lasted for two centuries and was ended by the sweeping conquests of Alexander the Great, who destroyed Persepolis in 331 B.C. The Achaemenid period is well documented by the descriptions of Greek and Old Testament writers as well as by abundant archaeological remains.

Fluted bowls and plates of the Achaemenid period continue a tradition begun in the Assyrian Empire. While they were given as royal gifts, it seems that they were also valued and exchanged simply for the weight of the precious metals from which they were made.
Description: Full View Repository: The Metropolitan Museum of Art Repository: New York, New York, USA Repository: Purchase, Harris Brisbane Dick Fund, 1954 Repository: 54.3.1 Repository: http://www.metmuseum.org Collection: The Metropolitan Museum of Art Collection Collection: Formerly in The AMICO Library ID Number: MMA_.54.3.1 Source: Data From: The Metropolitan Museum of Art Rights: This image was provided by The Metropolitan Museum of Art. More than 250, 000 people came to the nation's capital to demand equality for blacks and to urge Congress to pass pending civil rights legislation. More than 2, 000 "freedom buses" and thirty "freedom trains" converged in Washington, bringing more than a quarter million marchers, over 60, 000 of them white. The march was the largest demonstration of its kind in the history of the United States. USA. Washington, D.C. August 28, 1963.
