Writing Assignment One

Length: 400 words minimum – 600 words maximum

Format: Research Essay – two source minimum

This assignment is worth 15% of the final mark. It is based on key terminologies discussed

in the First Chapter PDF link, Religious Responses. It is to be formatted in the style on an

essay no shorter than 400 words and no longer than 600 words. As with the final essay, this

assignment will be in the style of a research paper; therefore, a minimum of two sources

will be required. Sources and citations are to follow the MLA (Modern Language

Association) format or APA (American Psychological Association) format.

Topics

1. Discuss key concepts of the Materialistic Perspective in relation to the understanding of religion from one of the following perspectives: Ludwig

Feuerbach, Sigmund Freud, Karl Marx, or any modern interpretations.

2. Discuss the concept of Mircea Eliade’s Sacred and Profane.

3. Explain how the Ultimate Reality can be understood through its two main faces: immanent and transcendent.

4. Define Atheism.

5. Discuss the roles of Agnosticism from modern-day religious and cultural understandings.

6. Discuss the differences and/or commonalities between the aspects of Worship: rituals, sacraments, prayers, and spiritual practices. (Examples from one religion

may be used)

7. How do myths create models for human behavior. Both religious and cultural practices and models can be examined.

8. Discuss the differences between Orthodoxy and Absolutism.

9. Examine the modern misinterpretation of the term Fundamentalist. How does this misinterpretation lead to cultural stereotypes.

10. Discuss two to three aspects of the Negative Side of Organized Religion. Cite from either modern day or historical examples.

11. Discuss the difference between the terms ‘religion’ and ‘organized religion’.

12. Discuss the renewal of the Goddess ideology in today’s societies.
