How Will You Impact or Incorporate a Christian Worldview within the Parameters of an Existing or Future Sports Organization?

Sports has a genuine place in the lives of Christians. It is apparent that people engage in sports because of the love they feel for the game and to fulfill the innate desire to compete. At the same time, people engage in sports to enjoy the sense of community that emerges from participation. Sports, when played and spectated on basis of honesty and faithfulness gains a legal place in the lives of most if not all Christians. However, in the event that love for sport and desire to compete goes beyond the love for God and the need to be honest, sports becomes a distraction. In other words, the legality of sports in the life of a Christian is determined by the level of involvement as well as the nature of involvement.

The Christian worldview in sports is important in guiding behavior of those in sports and in sports organizations. For instance, we have learnt the importance of ethics in leadership and in management of sports organization. The Christian worldview requires that we act in absolute honesty in all our endeavors. In the book of Romans 12.1 the bible writes “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship” and in Mark 9.29, it is written “And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting”. From these two scripture readings, one can view that for people in sports to offer themselves and perform their assigned duties in total honesty, they need to have their behavior modified. To indulge in behaviors that will please and appeal to both God and man, they must engage in prayer and fasting so that they are modified to become what God intends them to be.

In sports also, the issue of winning versus losing is very critical. The battle and competition in sports is more spiritual than it is physical (Webster, 2014). This is true for both spectators and players as well as their coaches. In the event that the fans and players lack he self-control to manage their emotions following a winning or a losing situation, sports will be a field of chaos. Self-control is one of the fruits of Holy Spirit. From a Christian perspective, therefore, it is impossible to exercise self-control if you have not experienced Holy Spirit. In Galatians 5:22-23 the bible is written “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law”. In other words, if people in sports organization had the fruit of self-control, the problem of indiscipline would be non-existent. In other words, with the Holy Spirit, it is unlikely that one will let the desire to win cause them to spin out of control.

The actual meaning of sports from a Christian worldview tends to be controversial. While some Christians view sports as a mere game and an activity through which they pass time, others perceive sports as a religious act of devotion to fulfillment of an inner passion using both time and money. For those who disregard sports, argue from the perspective that it is often treated as a god by those who passionately love it while those who see it a religious act, perceive sport as a way to express a gift from God (Treat, 2015). The bottom line is that sports are an important part of human culture and when conducted in honesty and in justice, they gain a legitimate place in the lives of Christians.

In conclusion, sports are important in the lives of Christians. They provide them with opportunities to appreciate gifts that are God-given and to spend quality time with their families. The Christian worldview helps people in sports organizations to demonstrate the right conduct and to exercise self-control in situations of winning or losing. When treated as a gift from God, sports involvement should not take up time meant for family, worship among other important activities in the life of a Christian.
