Step 1. Outline: Formulating a claim and reasons

Claim: The current US immigration policies are ineffective and must be revised to reduce illegal immigration.

Reasons:

1. The current US immigration policies are outdated and do not reflect the current needs of the US population. The existing system is founded on antiquated notions regarding who can immigrate and how they should be treated after they do so. This system does not include any provisions for those people who may be migrating from their countries so that they can escape from violence. those immigrants who might have, particular talents that could be valuable to the economy, of the United States, or immigrants who have greatly impacted by natural disasters such as earthquakes or floods

2. The current US immigration policies do not provide enough resources to adequately monitor and secure the US border.

3. The current US immigration policies are not adequately addressing the root causes of illegal immigration, such as poverty and lack of opportunity in other countries.

Step 2- Outline: providing data/evidence

Evidence:

1. According to a study from the Pew Research Center, the US immigration system “has not been significantly changed since 1965” (“Modern Immigration Wave Brings 59 Million to U.S., Driving Population Growth and Change Through 2065,” 2019).

2. A report from the US Government Accountability Office found that US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) did not have the resources needed to monitor and secure the US border and that “CBP has not always been able to secure the border” (“Border Security,” 2018).

3. A report from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees found that “the majority of the world’s refugees are from the poorest countries and regions,” indicating that poverty and lack of opportunity are major drivers of illegal immigration (“Global Trends,” 2019).

Step 3- Outline: Examining an Unstated Assumption

Unstated Assumption:

1. The US immigration policies must be updated to reflect the current needs of the US population. Because of this current policies will need to be altered so that they reflect the increased, diversity and shifting demographics of the United States' population. To add on this it should guarantee the safety and security of the immigrant communities and offer a way to citizenship for long-term residents.

2. The US government must provide adequate resources to ensure the US border is secure.

This means that the federal government has to input more resources toward bolstering border security in the areas of manpower, technology, and physical infrastructure. Among these measures are, for instance bolstering the manpower of border guards installing electronic monitoring systems and constructing a barrier along some stretches of the border.

3. The US immigration policies must address the root causes of illegal immigration, such as poverty and lack of opportunity in other countries.

This means that the United States has to accept to work together with the other nations to enable them to solve, the economic and social problems, that are most likely the factors that push individuals to leave their homes. This will enable the United States of America, for example to assist those nations in finding a solution to such events or circumstances. This might involve stepping up diplomatic efforts, expanding financial help to emerging nations, and offering more technical assistance and training. Expanding refugee and asylum programs are two examples of facilitating lawful migration to the United States.

Step 4- Outline: Identifying an objection and Rebuttal

Objection: The US government should only focus on reducing illegal immigration and not revising the US immigration policies.

Rebuttal: The US government should focus on both reducing illegal immigration and revising the US immigration policies in order to provide a comprehensive solution to the issue of illegal immigration. By revising the current US immigration policies, the US government can ensure that the US immigration system is up to date, that the US border is adequately monitored and secured, and that the root causes of illegal immigration, such as poverty and lack of opportunity in other countries, are addressed.

Step 5. Outline: Using Ethos, Pathos and Logos:

Ethos: I have been studying US immigration policies for the past five years and I am confident that the current policies must be revised in order to effectively reduce illegal immigration.

Pathos: Every day, thousands of innocent people risk their lives to illegally cross the US border in search of a better life. It is our moral obligation to provide them with a safe and secure way to legally enter the US, and the only way to do that is to revise the current US immigration policies.

Logos: The evidence is clear that the US immigration policies are outdated, that the US border is not adequately secured, and that the root causes of illegal immigration, such as poverty and lack of opportunity in other countries, are not being addressed. Therefore, it is logical to conclude that the current US immigration policies must be revised in order to reduce illegal immigration.
